What are winter gas prices like in CT? I would be especially interested in costs for an older house (pre 1940, oil-turned-to-gas) of a little more than 3000 sq. ft? We just got our gas bill this month and it was approx. $1300. Supposedly, we used 778 cubic feet last month which seems quite absurd! (We keep the temperature at 71 for my dad who cannot tolerate cold temps. I myself prefer 68-9).

We had a house half the size in IL that we kept at the same temp, but our gas bills were never higher than $250. I'm guessing for twice the size, it would be $500. And yes, granted different states have different prices, but $1300 is still way over $500!

I have a friend with a historic home that is prolly about 3000 sq feet if not more and their heating bill is about 1200 a month.
So it sounds about right to me.
One of the reasons i would never buy a historic home the windows (if original) have little insulating qualities.

I would consider keeping it cooler.

71 is very high.

I keep my 1600 sq foot home at 70 and pay 500 a month.

The lower you keep that thermostat the more you will save.

Could it be that the gas company had done estimated readings earlier and this bill was a correction for previous months that were lower? I have had a similar problem with the water authority (MDC) here. They kept sending me estimated bills and over charging. I got my sewer useage bill and found it ot be double past years. Turned out MDC was not reading my newly installed automatic meter and was over charging water useage a lot. Talk to the gas company and see. Could also be a misread meter. Had that problem with MDC too a couple of years ago. Jay

Holy Cow, $1300.00 is high! If that turns out to be correct, you should look into spreading out your annual cost with a set price each month. And definitely lower your thermostat, and look into some other energy saving changes like new windows.

I think thats high - we are a family of four, just over 2,000 square feet and we average about 300-400 per month. Our home has old windows that are not the least bit energy efficient. We keep out upstairs at about 70 overnight (for the kids) and lower it to about 62 in the day. Downstairs we keep it at about 65.

Same here. My home is about 1,900 sq. ft. I have 2 zones. We keep the temp at 61/62 during the day, 70 in the early evening, then we lower back down to 62 when we are sleeping overnight. I also need to replace a few windows to make the home more energy efficient.

So far, my bills have been around $250.

I actually think your bill sounds about right based on the temperature you state. I live in a house built in 1910. It's a little shy of 3200 square feet, has its original windows and essentially no insulation. We keep it at 62 degrees all the time and our gas bill last month was $650.

Thank you very much for your replies, everyone! CNG is coming tomorrow to check the meter; we'll see what they say.

It's all somewhat bizarre because about 3 months ago, we had a bill for $550, so we called up concerned. They told us that it was obviously a mistake and corrected it--that's why this came as such a shock.
