My family and I will be moving to Fairfield county and we are trying to find a neighborhood where we can:

Walk to shops and restaurants
Send kids to high quality public schools nearby
Be near a train station to the city
Find a 4bdrm house for around $1M

(I know it is quite the wish list!)

Any idea what parts (if any) of Greenwich, Stamford, New Caanan, Darien or Norwalk would have this?

Would love any perspective out there!

With Greenwich you might be pushing your luck with the 1 million dollar house with the size requirements your suggested. The other towns would be better. Norwalk would be the most economical- and you could find a home with your criteria for far less. Stamford also would be a good place with that budget of 1 million.

New Canaan is a wonderful town- chances are good you might find something within your price range. Although there is no train in town nearby. Darien is very expensive- second only to Greenwich.

If schools are your top priority, then I would not recommend Norwalk or Stamford. While the elementary schools are okay, the middle and high schools have issues. Norwalk is a small city with some urban issues. Stamford is a large city with some issues too. For $1 million you could get a very nice home in a nicer community like Darien or New Canaan. If these towns do not provide you with the type of home you are looking for, try Fairfield. It is less expensive than other Fairfield County towns but the schools are excellent and it is beautiful. Good luck, Jay

I actually think that it would be tough to find a 4 br house in New Canaan for $1MM. New Canaan is the terminal station for a Metro North spur that goes through Stamford though.

I have lived in Stamford all my life, the schools here are so, so, they JUST did a redistricting of schools, alot of parents who have purchased a home here because of the "neighborhood" schools being redistricted to other city schools, which are farther away, and not in the best area, are very upset over this, thought I would save you a headache...the people up the street from up, just put their house up for sale, and are wanting to move to Greenwich, I have friends who live in Greenwich, they love it there, the schools are great, New Canaan, is really nice as well........you pretty much can find a neighborhood in any of those citys listed w/ shopping areas close by, and train stations close by as well....I live in Stamford, and will admit that the schools especially middle and high schools are NOT good....good luck!

Default Byram

Thank you for the help everyone.

Greenwich appears very nice and one of the few "affordable" spots I could find is Byram which is very close to Port Chester.

How is this neighborhood? Are the schools still better than Stamford and is the area safe and vibrant?
