The Netgear router that I currently have (I bought it in 2012) is going out and I need a new one. I was thinking I would get a $30-$40 one from Walmart, but I'm not sure what would be best.

I wouldn't buy the cheap router. You get what you pay for. I have a Netgear AC1750 router. It works great and I think I paid around $80 on sale.
The AC1750 TP Link at this time has over 30,000 reviews. It's at 4.5 stars. Sure, there may be some fake ones but it's kind of hard to dispute that. That is why I recommended. I also stated there are many more choices.
I've had positive experiences with TP-Link products. I don't own any routers but I've used some of their switches and poe injectors. I have no reason to doubt that they work and work well.
Netgear is good as well and not overpriced but on paper it's the same as TP-Link.
I'm a fan of Netgear and Linksys myself. I swear by the Netgear Orbi mesh kits, but those get into big money compared to the basic ones. The AX4200 kit I'm using now was about $450. Most people don't need that particular one, but it does everything I need with all the devices we have and is rock stable with a signal everywhere in my house plus my backyard.

TP_LINK is and always has been the "value brand". Nothing wrong with the "value" brand but I prefer to support the more well known and IMO better ... major brands I guess we can call it? Same reason I don't buy or recommend Acer.
I don't care about reviews or that "they are both made in China". Acer has good reviews too. Netgear is absolutely a more reputable company. And when it comes to the important gear, I prefer the better brands.
I'll support the brand that has a significantly better online presence.
And it's not that I've never bought TP... I have. Had a wifi USB adapter from them. It was trash. So it's not just branding or support that I like.

I'll take 30k reviews over ONE person on an internet forum. Sorry, but that's just me. Fact is they both work just as well.
I'm not knocking Netgear, I own one. But none of this convinces me that it's better than the TP-Link.

Check into TP-Link routers on Amazon. They start around $35. They are also easy to setup and they will do 2.4 and 5 ghz speeds.
