Am I the only person that does not see the appeal of wide screen TV's, with a picture that makes people look like distorted, fat elves? I really don't find the picture to be all that great for the non HDTV channels as well. Am I missing something?
If the picture is distorted it's because the image has been cropped and what you are watching was not filmed in widescreen. Something filmed in 16x9, 1.85:1, or 2.40:1 shouldn't look distorted.
The 16x9 format is more viewer-friendly for most since is more resembles humans' natural field of vision.

Key word here is "filmed" or recorded in 16x9 format. An HD channel can broadcast a program in HD, but it isn't necessarily recorded in a format that doesn't make people look all stretched out.

Wow, i thought i was the only one also!
On a smaller flat screen(<27"), it's not bad. But as the screen size increases, the picture does appear to be artificially compressed(top-bottom). I need to switch to the 4/3 picture setting if i'm watching on a big screen.
I don't hate them...I just have no desire to spend the $$$ for it right now.
