Those who enjoy the fast-growing sport of axe throwing now have a place in the region where they can play it. The same people who own Cookeville Escape have opened Cookeville Bullseye.

Noticed that Gaw Developments has started construction of townhomes or apartments at the old Timeless Images site on southeast corner of Neal and South Maple. Looks like they are tearing down the old house and cutting some trees already. Confirmed by a source working there.

Oh no! I love that old house! It's such a shame that they couldn't spare it. I saw a lot of earth moving equipment there yesterday but didn't realize they were going to tear down the house. That makes me sad.

Well, I was by there today and the house is still standing. They have cut lots of trees down and looks like one end of the house has been altered somewhat. My source says it is coming down. Time will tell. I have never been inside so have no idea of the condition of the house or roof etc. Is it as old as it looks?

Yes it is. If I recall correctly, my wife and I took engagement pictures there and the inside looked old then. That was 15+ years ago.

The house was built in 1900 according to the state property assessor web site. I have no idea if the house is historically significant, but I do like it. In 1900 Cookeville had a population of only about 1,000, so back then this house was out in the country and, I assume, part of a large farm. It's called the Maddux House after the Maddux family which, as I've been told, has included some prominent local judges and other elected officials. I suppose if the Maddux family isn't interested in its restoration, then there's not much any of us can do. The Gaw-Bernhardt development group bought the 5-acre property in 2017 and had it rezoned to allow high density housing, and no one said anything at the time about saving the old house. Oh well. The Gaws also own the 90 acres surrounding it and across the street, but I don't know if those 90 acres are part of the same development.

I took this picture a couple of years ago of the house.

As of Thursday evening all of the trees around the house had been removed. I expect the house to go soon.

Someone from the H-C actually sent me a message here asking if they could use my picture. I honestly don't mind and am flattered that not only did they want to use the picture, but apparently they read our posts here at city-data. And holy cow, the comments on Facebook are fun to read. So far, there are 110 responses, almost all of them completely against tearing down the old house. There's nothing legally the city can do to stop the developers from tearing it down, but the article does make it sound like the city planners do have some reservations about the development which have nothing to do with the Maddux House. Fitting 40 townhouses on 5 hilly acres will be tricky, particularly when it comes to making it accessible to fire and garbage trucks. It'll be interesting to see what the planning commission decides at its meeting Monday night.
