California police officer's gun goes off in elementary school during safety demo - NY Daily News

Read the story. The gun went off accidentally. Really? A gun can't go off accidentally, someone has to pull the trigger.

Either the cop pulled the trigger or someone else did which brings up why a loaded gun was in the open anyway? If you are going to show a gun to school children for safety training awareness, you use a prop or replica, they make them for just that purpose. A police officer should never unload their firearm in the public for any reason that to store it away. A police officer with an unloaded gun is vulnerable and cannot properly discharge all of their duties should the worst happen.

This is pure negligence but read the story. Notice the wording. It is the guns fault his happen, according to the way the story is written. Anything to protect the stupid.

"Tamrin Olden, the Chino Police Department’s crime-prevention supervisor, said the gun went off at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday during a presentation at Newman Elementary School."

The gun went off? No, _______ pulled the trigger and the gun fired. There was a human being at fault, the gun operated according to what a human made it do.

Will this nonsense ever stop? Its just like SUV that hit other cars and kill people. No, a driver caused the accident, the driver just happened to be in an SUV. Goodness.

A loaded gun should not be used for a demo unless the demo requires firing the gun. An unloaded gun would have been fine.

From what I saw on the news last night, IIRC anyways, was that the gun was mounted on the officers motorcycle. A child walked up and pulled the trigger. The bullet struck a steel plate at the front of the mount for the rifle, disintigrating the bullet and that shrapnel is where the injuries came from.

So it appears that the gun was not part of the presentation after-all.

No, I think the bike was part of the demonstration too. lol

But yes, it should have been unloaded at this event. This wasn't his side arm. This was his AR-15 mounted to the bike, so he could have taken the magazine out of it and still had his side arm to carry out his duties should the need arise.

Or, I dunno, maybe have the safety on at the very least.

Stupidity cancels out all efforts of safety.

The Police are the only ones who should have guns since they're trained to use them safely.
Isn't that the mantra that's been chanted over the last few years by the anti-gun crowd?

"Safety presentation?" That really sensationalizes it. Red Ribbon Week is aimed at drug use and bullying. Regardless of any hyperbole, the officer should have cleared the weapon before leaving it unattended.

Yeah I am more troubled by a government employee with a firearm then a private citizen. You would be surprised and shocked at the amount of AD's attributed to Police Officers. Keeping in mind that the roles of LEO's aren't exactly gleamed from the best and brightest of society, it's a blue collar job. That and complacency.

The reason that many police agencies are issued Glock model firearms is because they are idiot proof in terms of firing (i.e. even a police officer can manage to operate it) - no safety to worry about, little maintanance, reliable, just point and shoot. It's the "no safety" thing that they seem to always forget about.
