You will never be able to prevent that. It's simply cost prohibitive to put an armed guard on every door of every school in the country, as well as around the school grounds. It's never going to happen, so forget it. You can't prevent this, once the perpetrator has the weapon.
I think compared to Columbine, the response to Arapahoe was 1000% better. But thats not saying much. Since Columbine was probably the worst police tactical operation in the history of the world. Even many LEOs were totally disgusted with the police response to Columbine.
Comparing Arapahoe to Sandy Hook, is apples and oranges. The difference is not in how police responded. They responded exactly the same in each case. The difference was in the caliber of weapons. If Karl Pierson had, had the same weapons that Adam Lanza had, there could have been just as many casualties at Arapahoe. And that one armed sheriff's deputy would not have been able to prevent it. In fact he would have been out gunned. This just proves the need for an assault weapons ban.
From the article:
Robinson also credited the faculty member for having left the school as soon as the threat became apparent. "In my opinion, that was the most important tactical decision that could have been made," Robinson said on Friday. The faculty member "left that school in an effort to try to encourage the shooter to also leave the school."
Who are they kidding? The gunmen took a shot at the librarian and missed. The librarian then ran out of the school. That wasn't any tactical decision.
It was just basic survival instinct. It also illustrates a fail in police logic on the part of the sheriff. It was good that the targeted faculty member left the school, but meanwhile they keep the students in the school with the gunman.
Something is wrong there. Locking students down in the school with an active shooter, I think is a really bad idea, that could have disastrous consequences.
Police tactics have improved a lot since Columbine. Getting inside the school and neutralizing the gunman as quickly as possible is good. But they have got to work on getting the students out of there at the same time. IMHO.
