Oh yeah, he paid for his crimes but where's the remorse? He has said he's sorry but not for abusing the dogs; only for breaking the law. That is reason to tell his story? To hold himself up (nevermind those who are elevating him) as a role model? Let's see, why not get Charles Manson; I'm sure he is sorry for getting caught, also.
As for "paying dearly" for his crimes? Exactly what part of his little itty bitty yearly salary is "paying dearly"? The first half million? Has he donated any of his itty bitty salary to saving and rehabbing the dogs he personally is responsible for harming? THAT would garner him some "let it go" attitude; but I know he hasn't paid that price because I have donated on their behalf. Some are still undergoing treatment at enormous expense ...
As for "paying dearly" for his crimes, Michael Vick served 21 months in Leavenworth, plus additional confinement and parole. That's 21 months in one of America's most notorious penitentiaries. Not a county lock-up, or a state jail, or a Federal country club prison playing golf with Mafioso. A penitentiary. He will carry a felony conviction with him wherever he goes forever; he also declared bankruptcy after losing his job and paying his legal bills. In agreement with Federal authorities, he placed nearly $1 million dollars in an escrow account to reimburse costs of the lifetime medical care for the confiscated dogs that were offered for adoption under supervision of a court-appointed specialist.
On his behalf, I apologize to you that he happens to have a talent that is, indeed, over-valued in our society, but that's capitalism for you. And he has, in fact, turned his life around remarkably since his stint in prison. He's not the man he used to be, but I suspect you wouldn't believe that no matter what kind of proof was presented.

All of that IS good........however, does that make HIM a roll model???
IMO that just makes him someone moving on with his life.
This article was briefly discussed on the Raleigh Forum but I wanted to get reaction here. I think most of us will agree dog fighting is obscene and of course illegal. We know Vick went to prison, lost a few years of his career, etc and I don't want to discuss dogfighting as much as the wisdom or lack thereof of asking such a controversial figure to speak publicly.
Personally I would have picked somebody a bit more responsible and uplifting to speak. Surely there are many other better choices.

Are they asking him to be ROLE model or a speaker? I think you and others are trying to move the goal post. There is a distinct difference between having someone speak and having someone being a role model. Perhaps WE do need to revisit the OP, because people have brought up things that the OP asked not to like dog fighting. The discussion was supposed to be if he is a good choice as a speaker.
Again it's all about what they are trying to accomplish. If they want to show a redemptive story of someone that has fallen, but has changed his life and is doing better, then it's hard to find a better story, but if you want someone that people can look up to, then that's a different context. I don't honestly know what the goal is, but this conversation has been flooded by irrelevant babble about one particular thing he did that doesn't really explain if he should speak or not.

When it takes a team of advisers to change your persona.......you have just changed the surface.
Mike Vick has been out almost 5 years now and has not got into trouble once.
He has done nothing but good in his and others peoples lives since.
George Zimmerman on the hand can't seem to stay out of trouble and now wants fight people.
Yet he couldn't beat up, Trayvon that night
Justin Bieber Can't stay out trouble, yet I don't see these same responses about them!

Ants are harmless. You could have swept them away. You killed innocent defenseless animals. You must be a sociopath.
Nothing will stop your killing ways. I will find a safe home for all ants but you should just stayed locked in your house.
Exactly....
you are TOTALLY missing the point.... I did not kill the ants or insects or rodents purely for my own pleasure..... but to protect myself and my property that I work very hard for every single day.... unfortunately, I can't throw a ball very well.....
Michael Vick and his cohorts abused and tortured and killed FOR THEIR OWN PLEASURE.......
now can you see the difference??
