San Francisco bans sale of plastic water bottles on city property | MSNBC

By 2018 they would be totally unable to be sold.

I think it's a good idea, but I'm sure many people here will insist that just because they are the consumer they should be able to buy whatever they so please.

Concord, Mass., the first US city to ban sale of plastic water bottles - U.S. News

We did it first. Personally I think it's kind of dumb. They already get recycled. What kind of containers can people use? Go back to glass? I don't use store bought water anyway.

How about using bottle deposits like many states do with pop bottles/cans?

Yeah, I don't understand why it would be necessary, since most of them get recycled.

So now we're supposed to carry our own bottles, buy those artsy metal or glass ones that are for sale everywhere? A lot of the colored metal ones are made in China, btw. There's one brand that's made in the US, not sure which one.

Not sure what the source of this was, but I recall seeing that only some 20-30% of bottles are actually recycled.

Because most bottles don't get recycled. Put deposits on them.

There will always be people so self-centered that they will never abide anything society does for the good of society.

I think plastic containers should be outlawed and go back to waxed paper cartons for milk ect.,at least they are biodegradable! It was asinine to become a freaking toxic plastic society in the first place!

I don't know about outlawed, but there are huge advantages to using paper cartons for more food products. Not only is it biodegradable and recyclable, the real savings comes from the fact that rectangular containers can hold more product in the same physical space of cylindrical containers, or the same amount of product in a smaller space. This results in huge savings for shipping and storage.

This fashion of drinking bottled water rather than tap water when the tap water is okay has never been a good thing. So it is a good trend that people should use less pre-bottled water.
