And I don't agree that we were "stuck" with the uninsured's bills, but why wasn't that addressed instead of dismantling the whole system? We could have started with NOT paying for illegals that showed up at emergency rooms, and sent them on their way. Cold hearted? Nope, just expecting my American tax dollars to go toward helping legal Americans.
Clueless. there was definitely a willingness to deal with the issues From "the other side" the problem is the left refusing to work together. Lets not let the truth be lost here. "We have to pass it to see whats in it" ring a bell?
Stop listening to msnbc and Obama's one sided dishonesty.
There were lots of ideas from the other side. It just wasnt socialistic enough for the far left.
+1
and as I recall "the other side" offered a willingness to bring issues to the table and come up with something for the good of all. e.g. tort reform, being able to buy insurance across state lines, catastrophic insurance availability.
To say 'the other side' had fingers in ears and was unwilling is dishonest and to say 'we won, deal with it' while ramming a one sided approach through was/is not in the best interests of this country.
Actually, you are often not required to have car insurance. You can place a bond with the state, make a cash deposit, or otherwise self-insure. A few states don't even require that - they only require that you be able to pay for any accident you cause or will otherwise be sanctioned.
And all that assumes you want to have a car and want to drive it on public roads.
Often? There are only 3 states, New Hampshire (able to pay), Virginia (un- insured motorist fund), and Mississippi. (bonds or cash)
I'm not going to read all the responses here because I don't really care who wants or doesn't want to be "civilly disobedient" but I did want to address the person or people who said they would just wait until they got sick to get insurance. Your health can turn on a dime, and you can find yourself in the ICU before you know what hit you. This can happen not only from an accident, but also from a sudden illness. I caught a little flu bug one year - never had the flu before in my life. I remember I was at work on Groundhog Day, but by the afternoon of February 4th (2 days later) I was in the ICU and they were calling in a priest. This little flu turned into every major organ failing and a bill that amounted to a quarter million dollars in total. I have insurance, so my out-of-pocket was only a few hundred dollars.
So, if you have that kind of ready cash to pay the hospital bill, by all means be disobedient, but if not, you'd better reconsider holding off on insurance until you get sick.
No, there are other states that allow one to use a bond or cash.
I could look them up for you but I'm too lazy.
Look into Oklahoma and/or California for example, or a certificate of deposit in Washington State. There's lots of 'em really.
I just looked on the DMV sites. California does allow you to forgo it IF you put down $35,000. Is that really a viable option for most people? Most people are not going to just have a spare $35,000 laying around, nor give it to the DMV to hold for them. Oklahoma's site said it does require insurance, including uninsured motorist coverage. Washington State requires you to put down $60,000.
"The certificate of deposit must be for at least $60,000. You can make a deposit of collateral with the State Treasurer'’ office or in a bank account set up for the state of Washington. You can get an application and instructions at the State Treasurer’s website:"
Obama care is just terrific for many here in Massachusetts. We had what was known as Romney care (yes that Romney) and 85% + of people were insured and most of them liked what they had and it was working. When Obama care came in it cancelled what was working and since it is still such a mess the state had to put hundreds of thousands of folks who fell through the cracks on Mass Health for FREE in order to comply with the new law. Obama care was a good idea but executed terribly.
Just remember, they had to pass the bill to see what was inside the bill, and now that the people see, they are not happy.
Name one thing the Govt is good at doing ? other than blowing stuff up.
No, I like having healthcare insurance and so do my kids, so you'll have to fight this windmill by yourself, Don Quixote.
Happy hunting.
As do we. Have had it for years paid for our kids' insurance when they couldn't do it, and have been happy about it. And we didn't need the Obamarama to tell us we had to do so.....nor do we need the guv'mint in our healthcare or insurance issues.....
Yes! I can and I will. Or I can always opt not to be suckered into a two week American hospital stay.
Besides, I figure if I'm saving $6500 a year in not paying for health insurance, PLUS the $10,000 deductible which I would have to pay out to get the cheapest insurance available to me - that adds up to $16,500 a year which I can bank. The fine would have to be HUGE in the next few years to be more than the amount I will save - and invest.
Unfortunately, one serious illness or a bad accident would wipe out everything you had. Hopefully it won't happen to you, bud sad experience here says you never know, don't take your good health for granted.
