Very nice the California Chrome won but the odds are against him achieving a triple crown as many other horses that won the first 2 triple crown races did not and the last triple crown winner was in 1978 (I think!). But hopefully California Chrome will succeed!

Just a heads up! California Chrome is the 34th horse to win the first two races. Only 11 have won all 3, so there's a reasonable chance, but of course not a given.

Well the 70's was 40's years ago, but and in truth the times have been pretty stable over that period. Unfortunately breeding for speed (with no noticeable gain in speed over time) modern Thoroughbreds are far more fragile with less endurance.

Two interesting pieces on the issue.

The latest news reports he might not be even running in Belmont unless they allow him to wear a nasal strip.

He has breathing difficulties.

My first thought when I saw this is that they're trying to get the media focused on something to leave them alone.

This will only cause the media to focus on them more .

Before I say anything on California Chrome's chances in the Belmont, I want to see a few things:

a) A complete results chart of the Kentucky Derby;

b) A complete results chart of the Preakness Stakes; and

c) Complete PPs of every entry in the Belmont.

Until then, I--and I would imagine every professional and amateur handicapper--cannot give any indication, or make any selections, as to who might win the Belmont.

He doesn't have breathing difficulties.

He's basically wearing a Breathe Right strip, like many athletes do for many sports. It is not an indicator of health nor does it improve performance.

Actually, the trainer/connections put it out there BEFORE making their request to use the strips to potentially sway the NYRA to give a favorable reply to their request. By putting it out there in the media, the "fans" have a chance to react before a decision is made. Pretty smart if you ask me.
