DETROIT, MI -- A teacher who swatted a student with a broom while trying to break up a frenzied fight between two teenagers was fired over the incident by the Education Achievement Authority.
Too bad they don't issue baseball bats to teachers for protection and to break up fights. Preferably a Louisville Slugger made in the USA.
That would be more effective than a simple broom stick.
Too bad she was fired. She should be given a hazardous pay bonus.

Exactly. What do they expect teachers to do in situations like this..seems like you are dammed if you do you are dammed if you don't.
Back in my day the teachers broom would have been the least of my worries when my parents found out but alas that's not true today.
Welcome to Detroit !!
I've been out of town the last 4 days but I thought I caught a news blurb stating that due to the amount of support for the teacher she has been given her job back.
Getting rid of corporal punishment really worked, didn't it? No wonder we're hearing about more stuff like this in schools! I hope the teacher gets her job back, or lands on her feet elsewhere, and in a better environment.

I am absolutely against teachers using violence on their students. However, this teacher injected herself to the best of her physical ability and while trying to jeopardize her own life in the process. At least one of those students should be expelled. Absolutely unacceptable. That kind of fighting could cause life long injuries. The parents of the victim could sue for millions, and rightfully so. She was absolutely right to do her best to protect the children. Yes, she struck one with a broom, and it was a blow that definitely would not cause serious injury, which makes it far gentler than the blows the students were delivering.
The school management should be personally fined (taken out of paychecks, not budgets). Fire them, and get someone in that believes in real security. Over 30 seconds and security couldn't get there? You give each teacher a radio that allows them to call for security instantly. If they can't reach a destination within 20 seconds, you either don't have enough security, or they were not positioned correctly.
