That one makes me sad. The poor dog was doing what it thought it was supposed to do, protect it's Master/Pack Leader/Whatever.

I have had several dogs over my lifetime and recently a rescued dog who I still don't trust with friends or family let alone strangers...even though she is MUCH improved from when she 'rescued me'. I am also very, very cautious about dogs, whether I know them or not...I used to babysit for a family when I was younger and I had an experience which left a lasting impression on me.

I was bitten in the back of my thigh by the family's Russian Caucasian Shepherd and it taught me a valuable lesson...just be cautious around dogs. The dog was 'protecting' the children when some neighborhood teenage boys were horsing around and running past (we were all in the family's backyard BBQing), in the chaos and confusion the dog got me as I got the two little girls out of the way.

I was 17 at the time and I never told my parents about it because I knew they would have had a fit and curtailed my business enterprise. The dog was horrified once he realized his mistake and let go of me immediately; I survived the ordeal and we were all better for the experience, everybody learned something that day.

So, yeah dog bites are up and I have no answers other than people have to be super vigilant and responsible to the nth degree for their dogs welfare as much as for others.

Yea, it does seem odd but I am assuming if he is new and he was afraid the UPS are afraid of getting sued.
He stumbled upon the wrong area, rang the bell and was probably afraid.

I'm not sure how pit bulls came into this thread but that explains why it's so long. People breed pit bulls to fight, so for a while their temper was unstable. Now the advocates are trying to save them. There is always each side going at it. If you ever want a long thread, post you dislike pit bulls. It will fill up in no time. Meanwhile you can hate cows, pigs and chicken all you want. lol

When My Wife and I were traveling around the country, I took any kind of job I could get, just to get by. Working a UPS 'busy season" as a driver helper in Vermont was one of them. Not only was it the hardest, most physically demanding job Ive ever had, I got bitten by two dogs in one month. Dogs to UPS guys are a real threat. I can see someone taking preemptive measures to defend themselves if this happened repeatedly over time. If you've never been attacked by a dog that is 3' tall and totally flipping out, you probably dont know how traumatic a dog attack can be. An as always, with any "dog" issue, its the owner that is at fault.

It's absolutely a reputable site unless you value dogs over people as many people have stated on here. Dogs attack people all the time for no reason. Look at the videos. Driver has a right to defend himself. PERIOD. Case closed. Move on.

Colleen Lynn has the same agenda that you do.... but she limits it to pit bulls.... so of COURSE that site is slanted and filled with half truths......

The dog shooting is retarded. I hope that cop lost his job over that, but I doubt he did. Totally sick. I'm sure the cop thought he was defending himself but I Don't think legal force is necessary. Don't these guys still carry battons?

The UPS issue is different. It is the UPS guys job to go on your property. If you want your packages delivered then keep your dogs restrained.

The dog owners apparently had an arrangement with the various delivery services to leave the package at the end of the drive, from what they said, that had worked well for the past six years. The dogs were restrained by an invisible fence (and I've seen what dogs trained to one do - they will run right up to the invisible fence and stop like they've hit a wall - I've also seen an electric fence, similar idea but visible, stop a very large Angus bull) and could only go halfway up the drive.

Looking for more reports on this to see if any of them indicate ANY bite, scratch, any injury at all to the UPS delivery man. So far, nothing.

I didn't read the whole story so sorry if I was jumping to conclusions. Was it a fill in UPS guy? I mean was he unaware of this agreement to leave package at the end of the driveway?

with that being said, i worked for fedex... my natural reaction of being caught off guard by a dog was to yell and/or run, or of course stay in the vehicle ... not pull out a knife. if you saw the dogs in advance, and didn't like how they were barking, no brown box for you.

I guess he should have let him self get bit first.

I think leaving your dogs unattended like that is irresponsible.
