Seeing as they have 1 billion more people than us I don't find it a surprise, just another media fear story.

i think it was predicted to happen in 2020. It's not surprising, but it means that America is losing some of it's "global dominance". will we still be the world's "sole superpower"?

Let China lead at the cost of it's human rights, more of the HK type protests ensue, most definitely.

By what measure? The measure that China beats us is the PPP GDP. Europe (EU) beat us in nominal GDP years ago. Did we lose dominance because of that? No we didn't, when you have more people it is easier to have a larger GDP.

This is like what, yesterday news? There was an identical topic in this forum like a month ago and another one a month before that.
Apparently China has surpassed the US for three times in 3 months, good job.

China might not retain the title for long. The U.S. is rapidly becoming world's largest energy producer, if not already, and we will soon be a major energy exporter. This means hundreds of billions of dollars flowing back into the economy, cheaper energy for domestic manufacturing, chemicals, and plastics.

The Saudis are trying to kill fracking by dumping cheap oil on the market, but that helps the U.S. as well, and fracking isn't going away soon, with a Republican dominated Congress.

3-D printing is revolutionizing manufacturing and enabling American companies to bring production back from Asia and Mexico.

Meanwhile, China has problems of its own. The population is restive and the Communist Party can only keep a lid on unrest as long as their economy is growing. If the Americans figure out a way to re-shore industries like plastics, electronics, and apparel, the Chinese will be in trouble.

Cheap domestic energy combined with a resurgence in domestic manufacturing is going to save the U.S., unless we continue to focus on wealth redistribution and other efforts that sacrifice economic productivity for social justice concerns.
