Reading online forums, it seems to me parents are damned if they do, damned if they don't. If you try to be careful, people will call you a nervous nellie. If you're not careful enough, you might be accused of child neglect.
Also, it bugs me that some posters are talking about what they've done and what their parents have done to try to justify certain habits. What they did in the 70s or 80s is irrelevant. That's why they have new laws. In the 70s, you can take your newborn home without a carseat. Not the case now. There's a reason for those laws, and it's not to inconvenience you. I was taken home as a newborn without a carseat, and I was probably left alone in the car as a small child. I won't defend it just because it was the norm when I was a child.

I have definitely found this to be true, and not only with parenting. Just everything. But you gotta take the bad with the good, I guess. C-D gets me through the day!
However, I did leave my dog in my Jeep Wrangler a few months ago.
Only the top was completely off so I'm still not sure what I was leaving him 'in'.
Anyway, I backed my Wrangler up to the patio at a bar. At 10:45pm when it was 58 degrees and once again the top was completely off.
I just finished unleashing an epic Sky-O version of Dio's song 'Last In Line' when the bartender said 'A few people have complained about your dog barking. . . . ' blah, blah, blah. And I asked her if that was going to be a problem, and she walked away and said in total biyotch mode 'I don't know. . . '
So I threw what was left of my Heineken across the bar and called her a fat biy-otch. Then on my way out I noticed a table that had huge 2x4 lumber pieces in a Jenga formation and I flipped the table over, and it sent all of the Jenga pieces on steroids across the bar and I held up my middle finger for the rest of the bar and said 'Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck youuuuuuuu!'
Anyway. The owner that I knew sent me a text the next morning and said 'Due to the show you put on last night, you are 86d from the bar.'

My issue with cases like this is that they tend to fall within contribution of delinquency or child abuse (neglect) laws that are selectively applied, inconsistently enforced, or are otherwise given legal loopholes through which a more devious mind can escape from legal consequence. It's the otherwise good, out-in-the-open parents who will be subject to being "caught in the act." For comparison, most people who habitually (and excessively) beat their children don't do so where the outside world is able to see. Meanwhile, Jane Doe runs into the convenience store to pay for gas and while pumping minutes later is confronted by Officer Fife under suspicion of felony child abuse.
It just doesn't sit well with me. I'm not saying it's correct to show blatant disregard for leaving your child (particularly a young child) unattended in a public parking lot, especially for an extended period of time, but crucifying anyone and everyone who does so at some point, for any and all reasons, is not only beyond the pale... it's intellectually dishonest.
Something to remember: More than three-quarters of abducted children were abducted by somebody they were related to or were familiar with, and those children were more likely to suffer harm (and greater harm) when the offender was a relative.
Wow, I have to say this is absolutely ridiculous. A lot of children suffer REAL abuse, but those parents never seem to get in trouble. I am becoming less and less inclined to ever want children in today's society.
In my opinion NO ONE SHOULD BRING AN INNOCENT CHILD INTO THIS ME$$ED UP WORLD!!!

These new laws are sometimes giving these busybodies something to latch on to and get innocent people in trouble. I'm 22, and it's scary to think that things MY parents did less than 20 years ago could get someone in a whole nightmare of legal crap nowadays.
They've passed so many laws that most parents who had kids before 1995 did something that was perfectly fine with them when they were younger that is illegal now...

The thing with the car is this... when I was a kid we sat in the parked car all the time, but the car wasn't locked, the windows manually rolled up and down, and we weren't strapped into car seats.
If anything was to happen to the car while the kids are in it in the vehicles we're in now, how the hell would they get out? This includes dropping your keys down the drain while your little kids are locked and buckled in. They're pretty much helpless in there if they're under 3 or 4. Thieves are also able to skirt keyless entry systems now. If your kids are in the car too bad, they're going for a ride with the bad dude. Happened just this morning in Philly.
It's not the same as leaving kids in the car in 1975 or even 1985.
Hehe. 10 years old and wondering if he can handle less than 2 minutes in the car? My goodness.
