I think the first thing to do is listen to their perspective. We can't help anyone if we don't understand their perspective. Throwing money or tear gas at the problem isn't addressing the problem.

Illegals can't get welfare (unless they have kids and even then not all programs) yet illegals manage to survive and even have extra to send back to their home country each week.

That one boggles the mind.

Frankly, I am not interested in their perspective. I don't care how angry someone is, it is not right for them to destroy property, attack others, and steal. It's not constructive, and only serves to reinforce the stereotype. Pull your pants up, start speaking proper English (none of this urban ghetto speak) and avail yourselves of all the opportunities and advantages that can be given to you simply because you ARE black. Don't look up to the trashiest examples of what success is. Conduct yourself differently and you will be treated differently.

If more members of the black community came to the table with actual perspective, and left the screaming, shouting, interupting, obfuscating, denial, violence and Rev Al/JJ shakedowns behind we could so much more effectively get down to brass tacks.

In order to be heard, one must speak in a manner that encourages listening.

We've already heard their perspective.

They are victims of society brought about by slavery practiced in the US 150 years ago.
So we lower the bar on almost everything and they still can't reach it.

Even illegals are passing them by in the dust.

So now what ?

I see SO much "black people are (fill in negative judgement)" answered with "Well, so are white people!" A kindergarten lesson: just because the other kid does it too doesn't make it right.

Thought is replaced by easily-chanted platitudes that fit nicely on protest signs.

It doesn't matter if someone is white or black or whatever. And the media is the biggest smoke screen to actually replacing generalizations with thinking, looking at individuals and solving problems.

And some people will look at this as "why can't we all just get along?" fluff and roll their eyes probably. If that's the response, they're part of the problem.

The mother talked about in the OP isn't a hero. She's not Mom of the Year, except maybe to her kids. She did something at least though.

That's the press for ya, built someone up then tear someone down. Or vice versa, picking them apart like a pack of wild boars. Your kid dresses up like a ninja and jumps in a tank of sharks, most parents would jump in and pull them out. People could relate, that's all.

Lest we forget, this country was built on the shoulders of black slaves. We are the economically prosperous country that we are because of free labor. Blacks picked cotton, cut sugar cane, built rail roads, and raised white babies for hundreds of years. Black men went out and fought wars for a country that didn't respect them, and wouldn't allow them to become educated. I totally respect other immigrant populations, but let's not make hasty comparisons.

The railroads were built on the backs of the Chinese AFTER blacks were free, but you don't hear Chinese-Americans talking about it now. They're more concerned with building up their lives in America today, something the modern black community has virtually no interest in unless it is handed to them with a spoon.

Lets not forget this long before ANY of us were alive. No black person alive today was ever a slave, no white person was a slave owner. Lets let go of the past instead of holding a part of history blacks have no part of over whites (who also had no part of) heads. I'm sick of hearing this reasoning, it has been beaten like a dead horse.
