Well the article itself makes it pretty clear that it's due to cultural influences. Atheism has become the hip thing, much like Eastern mysticism was in the 60's, New Age in the 70's, etc... It's a passing fad that will fade out sooner than later if immigration statistics have anything to do with it.
You're sorely mistaken! Atheism has always been around. The number of religious people will continue to dwindle down as we culturally become more educated. Religion played it's purpose when we understood very little about the world, it is becoming less and less relevant to today's society.
It occurred to me my faith tells me to put everyone else before myself. I'm not sure that's possible for a generation that seems to put nothing before themselves.
Actually, the morality that tells you to put everyone before yourself is wrong. It always was, and it's a bad way to think about life. Self-sacrifice is NOT a virtue.
I wonder if it's possible to tie these two trends into a more parsimonious picture.
Given the drop is greatest among people born after 1981, I wonder if that study factors in Millennials at all. Millennials are the ones abandoning religion at the greatest levels.
And locally...its the poor who tend to be more into Jesus. At least here in OC.
You say 2 things ........ bad parents is the problem, good parents teach well. That's very true.
The church can fill the space of having very bad parents.
Bad atheist parents lack this option.
So, how large do you suppose the subset of bad, inner-city, atheist parents is, anyway? Religion continues to grasp at straws as people leave in droves. It was a useful crutch to explain things that humankind did not yet understand.
These days, it's mostly for people who are uncomfortable with the basic premise of mortality.
The study also notes an “increasing acknowledgment that religion is not consistent with scientific understanding” could be driving adolescents away from religion. It is possible that “debates about teaching creationism or intelligent design in U.S. schools, such as those in Kansas in 2005, pushed some young people away from religion,”

Religion is a "farce" and young people know it!
For the sufficiently cynical, all human endeavor is farcical.
Some people do turn to prayer in times of trouble - it's merely a coping reflex. In itself it has zero significance.
It has 100% significance when you are the one who's had a tragedy in your life.
