Does it bug anyone besides me that public employees that are funded by our tax dollars tend to have these great benefit packages where they can retire after twenty years of "service" while the rest of us private sector chumps are probably going to end up working into our 70ies? I mean good for them but the fact that I'm their employer and provide such generous retirement benefits to them that I don't get to enjoy myself bothers me. Does it bother you? Sound off.

I am a Federal employee, with 32 years of service. I became "retirement eligible" when I had 30 (not 20) years in, but I don't receive many of my retirement benefits until I turn either 62 or 66. I plan on working t least five more years.

The only government employees I can think of who, generally, are retirement eligible after 20 years service are police, fire=fighter and the military.

20 year retirements are indeed reserved for law enforcement, military and firefighters and for good reasons. I will have 28 years with the federal government when I become eligible to retire at 60. The OP is probably similar to the people that thought I was crazy for accepting a position in the public sector. We all make decisions, we're all responsible for the outcome of those decisions. Sounds like sour grapes coming from the OP to me.

Sour grapes !!!!! Public employees WORK for what they get, it isn't a hand out. Everyone is free to pick and choose what path their life takes, some choose more wisely than others!

Doesn't bother me. Public service workers trade off salary and bonuses for the hope of a retirement payoff later. If it really bothers you, nothing's stopping you from applying for those positions.

Public employee contracts should require ratification via a referendum by the taxpaying public, with government workers not allowed to vote in that election.

Stop hating on public employees every job has trade-offs.

Yeah, no.

I have never understood the vitriol some people hold toward public employees. They're jobs, no more or less than yours or mine. Do you expect all levels of the government to be run by volunteers? They're already paid less than many could make in the private sector. Every job has trade-offs.
