It's kind of like a sex offender registry in that regard.
Or like a scarlet letter. The rebel flag substitutes nicely for a bumper-sticker that says, "I'm an ignorant bigot who supports violence against people I don't like." All that - and more! - summed up in one neat flag!

And you came to that conclusion based on the five people you met with confederate flags. You're basically a racist...or at least share a racist's thought process.
So you spoke to 5 people displaying the confederate flag and your impression of them led you to the conclusion that all of them are ignorant bigots? How is this any different than the way a racist may form his or her views about a group of people?
Lol - are you denying what the flag stands for? Are you going to wheel out that fictional horde of people who like flying the rebel flag, but who are also nice folks who like minorities and who only fly it because they like the colors or because they believe that the south can only succeed via more cotton industries?
Get real. Let me guess - if you saw a guy with a swastika tattooed on his forehead, you'd assume he did that just because he liked the shape of it and clearly had no idea what it represents.
No, just like the swastika, the rebel flag has a nasty meaning behind it, one that everyone knows. People don't choose to fly such a flag without associating themselves with that meaning and those beliefs... and every encounter I've had with such people has backed up that obvious fact.
Which is a fascinating argument when you consider the fact that the vast majority of African Americans still live in the south and I feel rather confident when I state that southern African Americans do not consider the Confederacy as a point of their "southern pride."
In point of fact during the Civil War, African Americans slave population constituted;
49% of Mississippi's population,
46% of South Carolina's,
37% of Georgia's,
35% of Alabama's,
34% of Florida's,
Only Delaware's slave population was below 10% of the total population.
So, it is specious to argue that anything connected with the Confederacy is based upon "Southern Heritage" automatically excludes large segments of the people who make up the people of the south. As a result if folks what to argue that this is some sort of honoring the past, then let's be intellectually honest and call it what it is; Southern White Heritage Pride and for the privilege you get to hold all the baggage that goes with it.
Well, you just pointed out something that I have been pointing out and next to no one will consider.
6 out of 10 African-Americans in the USA live in the Southern USA. However, the number of Blacks identifying with the Confederate flag as part of their(keyword being "their") Southern heritage is miniscule at best.

If you believe some of the nuts around here, they'd claim that's just a coincidence and the flag really just represents good old honest 'merican living or some drek. Which is clearly why white supremacist groups use it, and it always comes up when racism against blacks is on the table - that, and violence against "the government" or anybody else the nuts don't like.
What do those rapes have to do with what happened in Charleston? The two are not linked? Charleston is a totally separate situation.
If there is a desire to discuss rape, discuss rape as it applies to the situation. Now is not the time or the place to discuss this.
Both are acts of violence. Some see one as getting undeserved attention over the other. It always time to talk about violence that affects thousands of women.

Lol - right... Go on - show us all those folks you claim exist who fly the confederate flag on their own property who are NOT racists, bigots, or haters of "the government." We're waiting... and we'll be waiting a long time because you've got nothing.
Moderator cut: personal remarks it's not about "Southern pride" or fear of low cotton prices. It's about violence, revolt, and bigotry - and nothing more. The rebel flag is no different than the swastika, and I challenge you to prove otherwise. You can't, so instead you'll whine and moan like your kind do. Good luck with that.

So start a thread about that instead of wasting our time with your ignorant trolling about how the rebel flag is a great and really doesn't symbolize the bigotry and violence everyone knows it symbolizes.
