A T-shirt being sold at Target’s stores and on its website has sparked a backlash online, as many customers are claiming the top is offensive to women.
The black shirt, which has the word “trophy” in bold white letters across the front and costs $12.99, has many slamming the retailer for treating women and girls as objects. A number of customers have been posting photos of the T-shirt, which some say they spotted in the junior’s section, on social media, publicly criticizing what they say is a sexist move on Target’s part. While the shirt has reportedly been on sale since June, it’s only recently gained steam on social media.
(This is Not you OP, but rather a general statement to people making a fuss about this).
People are always looking to ***** about one thing or another.If a woman chooses to wear a shirt labeled "Trophy," that's her business. If she wants to be "objectified" by wearing this shirt, so be it. If she doesn't want to be "objectified" and still purchases and wears this shirt, so be it.
But guess what? If she doesn't want to wear this shirt, she doesnt have to and won't.
It's a symptom of mass-produced, mass-marketed clothing.
Imagine if we were all responsible for designing & creating our own clothing. Maybe one woman would think a "Trophy" t-shirt is a cute idea that fits her personality.
Problem is when it's mass-produced and offered as a suggestion to EVERYONE.
"What a horribly misogynistic t-shirt that is," many people would say.
Let's all reclaim our own brains and stop falling victim to everything that's mass-produced.
I've always thought it would be funny to spoof those Victoria's Secret pants that say "pink" and put "poop" instead��
Years ago a catalog that sold teen/young women's clothing carried a t-shirt that said "Oui" on it. No big deal if you didn't notice that the font in all small letters was identical to that of a porn magazine that was popular at the time. Perfect for a teen-aged girl- not.
Says more about the insecurities of the people complaining, really.
There's two ways you could look at it:
1) It's a shirt that says trophy and I'm wearing it because I know I'm hot/smart/confident/whatever so I gave myself this tongue-in-cheek shirt that says trophy on it.
2) I'm completely insecure and desperately seek validation from men so I've decided to label myself a trophy by wearing this shirt.
Flip the gender roles around, and you'll see how stupid it is. Pretty typical for jocks to get patches for their varsity jackets, especially if the team is actually good and makes it state. Literally, this is a trophy. Are the jocks objectifying themselves by putting a patch (a decorative object awarded for success, a trophy) on their jacket? Or are they more saying they're a badass?
That shirt doesn't bother me as much as some of Targets other clothes. My daughter outgrew girls sizes this year. We ended up buying her women's shorts instead of the misses sizes because the shorts had to be long enough for school. Several of the dresses weren't appropriate for school either because they needed a shirt under them. The dress doesn't look good with a shirt. We'd skip the 'trophy' shirt because it doesn't have any meaning to us.
I always think that people who wear pants with JUICY across the butt have chronic diarrhea, probably.
