It is possible to hate Walmart on soooo many levels. Poor quality, jobs hustled overseas, businesses bullied, small town economies ruined. Congrats wallyworld, your chickens are finally coming home to roost.

Box of General Mills Rice Chex at Walmart: 3.98, same box at Safeway 6.39
Can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup at Walmart 1.29, same can at Safeway 2.29

No difference in quality of product, same jobs by same manufacturer, didn't see any bullies, this is not a small town comparison.

If you can afford the luxury of shopping at the nice shiny supermarket, good for you. You shouldn't pass judgment on those who do not have that luxury. Walmart is filling a need in the market place, and are pretty darn good at it. And they will open more stores in the US this year than they close.

Why would Walmart even consider putting a store in a town with a population of 900?

It sounds to me like you're the bully.

Walmart has about 4,100 stores in the United States. It is closing over 100. Is that chickens coming home to roost.

Unfortunately for small store owners Walmart is able to offer better prices. But that is fortunate for residents of these small towns who can benefit from saving money.

Most consumers do not hate Walmart. If they did it would not be so successful. The average person who hates WalMart is someone who doesn't need to save money.

this is a non story. Yes, walmart is closing some underperforming stores. Most of these are the "express" variant that was an experiment that didn't work out for them. They are also opening up 300 more worldwide later this year and into 2017.

Yet Walmart says it will continue with its plans to open 300 new stores around the world later this year and 2017, including up to 60 new U.S. Supercenters and 10 new Sam's Club stores

Walmart will close 269 stores this year, affecting 16,000 workers - Jan. 15, 2016

Stores that are redundant or not profitable will be closed, new ones will be opened- just like every other business ever.

1. As Burger Fan points out, it seems to be lost that Wal-Mart is closing some under-performing stores and opening many new stores. So this is hardly "the chickens coming home to roost".

2. I rarely go to WalMart. When I do it's for a particular food product that none of the other local stores carry, or it's for something that I could try several other stores to find but come up empty handed, since Walmart seems to have a little of everything. Despite not being a fan, I've never understood the compulsion some people have to hate Walmart. If you want to shop there, shop there. If you don't shop elsewhere. I may not like Walmart much, but I like having the choice.

WalMart. . . .

A 'bully' that provides jobs and paychecks to people that want a bigger bully (government) too tell Walmart what to do.

Sounds like opportunity for someone else to come in and open a new business. They may never be able to beat Wal-Mart's prices. Offer some service, friendliness, a few local products and maybe delivery service within a limited area.

Might have helped to read the article. Those were "Experiment" stores.

Also, You have been helping the "Other" stores in their quest to keep low paying min wage jobs anyway....Did you think for one moment, that the local Ace hardware store was paying it's employees $15 or more per hour? LOL! How about the local FF joint, I'm sure you saw the counter clerk driving a nice Lexus right?

Thing is ALL companies have low wage jobs, it's up to YOU to make it what it is. Don't like the pay? Don't apply! Don't like to support such a company? Then support another WHICH DOES THE SAME to their employees...
