But isn't that the clew of the jib about 8 feet above the deck? And don't I see the faint outline of two sheets attached to it?
Looks like it to me, anyway.

The mast is equipped with steps. So it seems like they could have run some sort of emergency halyard and sail.
I looked at it again and agree with you. There is a storm jib or something on the forestay. It has to be pretty small or light for that small a cross section.

I would observe the spreader does not appear to have failed so a jury rig should have been straight forward. A few yards of wire or cord to pin the thing down. Particularly on a mast with steps.

The voyage went south quickly. They encountered what they said was a Force 11 storm — a classification for a violent storm with 37-52 foot waves — on their first night, which lasted for three days. They decided against returning to Hawaii.

“When we were through with that we were empowered to know we could withstand the forces of nature, the boat could withstand the forces of nature,” Appel said. “We decided not to return to Hawaii but to continue on in our journey because we believed that everything ‘shook out’ and we’d be all right.”

I've never understood why the boat is so filthy, either. It's the first thing I noticed.

Exactly. Unless they were frozen in an ice floe or becalmed -- for five months! -- they should have been able to find their way somewhere.

And after all that time, wouldn't someone have started to wonder where they'd gotten to? Started a search?

It would be interesting to have a biologist analyse the crud on the side. I have seen boats laid up in the water for a long time and they develop that pattern, but only in still waters, and only if tilted over to the side.

Hmmmmm! How did I miss that when I wrote about the bottom growth. It actually has the type of growth that would coincide with it being adrift for several months........or aground and heeled over on a sandbar.

Still not buying the story though, but then again, this world is full of morons and more are born every day. And since morons are attracted to other morons there would be a strong possibility that 2 morons came together and had the same F'd up plan to go for a month long sail without having any real experience on a boat before----other then watching Capt Ron a few times!

One had an unusually deep tan. But anyone can cover up with shirt sleeves and pants, and sunscreen or hats. If you're stuck drifting for months at sea, that would be a very good thing to do, if you can manage it.

I think it's clear at the least these two were guilty of rather poor judgement.

Before they started their drifting 'adventure,' they actually moored in one port with a damaged boat part but decided to go on ahead anyways.

The fact that one of the women so exuberantly blew kisses to the cameras of her rescuers (like she was on a red carpet/stage) seemed off to me...
