Florida State has halted virtually all Greek life on campus and has banned alcohol at all student events due to a young man's tragic death during Parent Week. Thoughts?

Outside of "socialization" (aka, parties), I don't see what value or purpose Greek life brings to a campus, especially when compared to other organizations. Reduce them to extra-curricular groups like regular college groups/clubs and stop giving them so much clout on campus.
I have never really understood their purpose or value either, other than belonging to a better-than-everyone-else elite boys (or girls) club. But perhaps I'm missing something. If they are meant to instill moral values and adult behavior, these ever-present hazing incidents seem to say otherwise.
They do seem to allow young adults to conduct themselves as immature spoiled children for an additional 4 years, but I doubt that's what most parents want for the money they're spending.
How many college students are over 21? Generally only part of the senior class so maybe 20%? So alcohol should be banned at student events since it would encouraging underage drinking. As for frats, my college had a strong frat scene and not a weekend went by without a bunch of fights and rapes/sexual assaults at frat parties. It's one thing when stuff happens at off campus parties but most frats are part of the campus and officially recognized by the university so supporting a system like that is bad business for schools.

The ban is temporary. It's just lip service. In a few months they will allow them back, after the members promise to behave. Nothing will really change.
Greek life can be positive (volunteer work with the elderly, tutoring grade school students etc), but it's often meshed with parties, drinking and sex....though some frats/sororities are 'service fraternities' where their only focus is community work. I remember at least one or two like that at my school.

What? No retsina and little fried fish? No old men sitting in the cafe sipping small cups of coffee and fiddling with prayer beads? No young men trying to show their manhood by diving for the cross on Epiphany?
Oh, you mean FRATERNITIES and SORORITIES, not actual Greeks. My bad.
Does it matter if they ban Greek life? That's no big loss.
I find it laughable that some people think you have to be in a Greek organization to do volunteer work.
If someone wants to do volunteer work, there are plenty of opportunities. There is no need to be in a frat or sorority to do volunteer work. Go help at the local food bank or become a Big Brother/Big Sister to a needy child. Go down and serve food to homeless people at the soup kitchen. Lots of people do these things and they aren't in Greek organizations.
