Means nothing. Every single species that is native to North America is protected under federal law. Even the vultures scavenging right next to the eagles. The only exceptions are a few that are introduced from the old world, like starlings and house sparrows. Their protection is that you cannot willfully kill or molest them simply because they are there, or for target practice..
Feel welcome to help any animal that is in distress, and I applaud you for it, but I am not morally nor legally bound to do the same, nor is there any reason why I should be..
What is wrong with you? You can't just read the story & move on? Or just write something positive? You feel the need to be sour? Poor you.
Yeah, my first thought was "I'd have done the same," but then I saw the pictures, and was reminded of how massive they are in person. Not only are they huge, but they are also apex predators, and among the most powerful animals on the planet, if not, THE most powerful... And... Eagles are known to be very, VERY bitchy birds lol. Both the guy and the bird are lucky here...
I worked at a Humane Society when I was younger. We had a Golden Eagle arrive, injured. It was HUGE, but very calm like this Bald Eagle.
What are a LOT BITCHIER BIRDS than Eagles, are Gulls. They will clamp onto anything they can get their beaks into when you are trying to rescue them. Nasty strength in their beaks... like vise grips squeezing you, even when you're wearing big thick leather gloves!
What he should have done is also covered the eagle's head to keep it even calmer.
We disturb their habitat to kill thousands of them and then pat ourselves on the back for saving one that we notice in trouble. What hypocrisy.
Those who learn to deal with highways will strengthen the gene pool. Like vultures, the "majestic" bird is a roadkill scavenger. Do we heriocally rescue vultures? Eagles are not endangered, there are more where that one came from.
Yes, there are plenty of us who try to rescue all creatures in this sort of distress. Lighten up, Francis.
