Several times a month, I have to press the button multiple times to verify whether or not the engine is running, which is why I always keep the garage door open when starting or turning off the car.

Same here, we have a new VW that is quiet as a mouse and it is my first keyless. The radio remains on and I have caught myself hitting the button more than once.

I drive a 2004 suv & if I had not needed to rent a car a few months ago, I would have no idea what ya’ll are talking about.

Apparently, these newer model cars go to ‘sleep’ when not in motion. Even in drive, just sitting at a red light! I kept thinking the car had stalled because I couldn’t hear it.

Luckily, it comes out of sleep quicker than my computer does. If I was in drive, all I had to do was take my foot off of the brake but if the car was in park, I can see how somebody could not realize their car was still on, get out & walk away.

It would be that quiet, keyless or not.

Perhaps cars need to be built with an external CO detector, then turn themselves off before reaching toxic levels?

Do we really need technology that requires more technology to make it safe?

I've pulled into my garage and thought I'd hit the off button. I've hit it, and started the car again by accident

It beeps at me if I open the door and it also beeps at me if I don't have the car in park.

The push button start cars can be very confusing. I guess older people might think it is off when they put the car into park and thought they had pushed the off button.

My car has that eco turned off thing at a stop.
So sometimes it's hard to tell if the car is off or off off. Rarely happens, but a consideration.

Never hard to tell when the engine on - giant V8.

Either way, though, the radio turns off when you open the driver door if the car is off off. That is my cue.

Sad to hear...
No difference. You either ignore the door chime, running engine, dashboard and lights or you don't. With a hybrid or stop/start it's a little easier as the engine isn't running. I've occasionally got as far as opening the door before being reminded by the door chime that the car is still on.
