In their words, the window was so far away that the grandfather's arms could not reach his hands out (otherwise he could obviously have held the child out of it as well). Yet, it was so close that when he dropped the child, she fell, not down, but out.

The family's claims are ridiculous. While I do not believe G Pa dropped her on purpose (at least, I hope not), the videos and pictures indicate there is no way he did not know the window was open.
Personally, I'm over speculating on what GP knew or thought. That's for the criminal justice system to try and suss out, to see if he was negligent or reckless, and good fun with that.
I am, however, ticked off at the idea that a window design like that constitutes a breach of a shipper's duty of care towards passengers. Taking in the ocean breeze is nice. And I so despise when over-grasping lawsuits stop pleasant activities enjoyed by responsible people.

I don’t actually know anyone that has such a perspective. No one would go on cruises if they were unable to enjoy the fresh sea air and views. Any fool can climb over his own balcony rail to his death. Any fool can jump off a building.
It's confusing as all out, and the lawyer in the civil suit is doing all he can to confuse it further. Apparently the window in question is so far removed from the passenger area that it's impossible for a man to lean out of it, yet - at the same time - it's a an absolute death trap that should have been cordoned off, or screened.
Good point! This family has done a terrible job from the start at getting people on their side. As time has gone on and info and videos have come out, it’s only gotten worse.

Why would he think it would be fun for the baby to be held/dangled/propped over an eleven story drop? I would be terrified. I feel such sadness for that poor baby. A tragic and horrific death that could have easily been avoided.
A baby wouldn't know the difference. Probably it was kind of a floating sensation for a few seconds and then a quick death. Not to be graphic, but from that height there was likely no time to register any pain before the CNS/brain was destroyed by the impact.
I wish, but it isn't so. Nightmares of falling are very common in young children. Probably a holdover from when we were primates gripping mama's fur as she swung through the trees. Ever wonder why newborns have that strong gripping reflex when anything touches their palms? As for fear of heights, look up visual cliff experiments in human and animal infants. No question that a toddler knows that falling is dangerous, and could lead to pain. She probably experienced terror, and an instant of pain before death. Her parents, relatives, and the step grandfather, on the other hand? A lifetime of imagining her final moment with regret and misery. That's why they've turned it against the cruise company. It's just too hard to accept that it was entirely idiot step-grandpa's fault, and if he had any signs of alcoholism, dementia, whatever, and they knew it, and allowed him access to her, then it was their fault, too.

Maybe, but if so, thankfully it lasted only seconds. I do not think there would have been time to register pain, but we will never know.
