For those that have been living under a rock, fixed gear bikes are those stupid trendy bikes with no brakes that hipsters ride in cities like Austin, Portland, Boston or Seattle. I live in Seattle and they're everywhere now. I honestly could care 2 @#%$'s what kind of bike other cyclists want to ride, but these bikes cause accidents because they're hard to stop unless you're an experienced rider. The problem is that it's a trend, which means most of these idiots are not experienced riders. As a cyclist, I feel that these morons are are literally changing the perception of cyclists in my city.

here is a video of this stupid trend

They should be banned on public roads, if I had my druthers. I am 100% in favor of more bicyclists, but fixed-gear is stupid and dangerous.

You really want MORE laws?

You feel we don't have enough?

If a bicycle runs a red light or stop sign, or swerves out into traffic in a dangerous way, then he should get a ticket just as a car would get one for doing the same thing.

Our laws are already adequate on that score. We don't need more.

If we DO get more, they should be done on a city or state basis. If a state wants more laws, it can go ahead and pass them. Just don't force them on other states that might not want them (that's why we HAVE separate states).

P.S. Personally I think bicycles without brakes are FAR too dangerous to be ridden, so I don't ride them. Mostly because I don't want to get dead. And I don't need laws to tell me that.

Is "all vehicles in traffic should be able to be brought to a controlled stop" really that onerous?

Darwin's law will probably get a couple of them.

If you're not a cyclist or you don't live in a major urban area, then you don't really have anything to add to this conversation.
And as one poster already said, it should be up to local government. Nobody cares it you want to ride a fixie outside of an urban environment.

Of course they shouldn't be banned but I was very confused when many people were telling me to get a bike with no brakes when I was looking to buy a new one. I think they work better in certain cities (they don't seem to be a problem at all in Philly).

The bike in the video had brakes. They can be fixed gear with brakes. Only an idiot would remove the brakes just for the looks.

Perhaps the EXISTING laws should be enforced on bicyclists?
You know the ones; speeding, failure to yield right-of-way, crosswalk violations, stop sign and red light violations, failure to ride in a careful and prudent manner, etc.
Seems to me, before we add new laws, the existing ones must be enforced!
THAT just might solve the problem!
