Deaths of Coppell mayor, daughter ruled murder-suicide 2:06 PM CT | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News

How sad--I don't understand how anyone could kill their own child, but I bet the woman was suffering from depression or another mental illness of some kind.

I read that in the Dallas Morning News...

It's always sad to see someone with their whole life ahead of them die. I didn't see why the other had to take the daughter with me.

lots of stories about how being a suicide really punishes the loved ones left behind--maybe he was trying to spare her the pain of his suicide
weird but then again...who is in his/her "right" mind if they are doing something like that
most people are in severe depression and don't see any way out of their particular hell...

The mayor is female. On the news photos, she looks so very normal. It's really scary that people are so mentally disturbed.

Her husband died of cancer January 2008. I'm sure she was in a really deep depression. Article I read stated there was no struggle from either the daughter or her. She stated that finally they could be a family again with Don, her husband.

Many "normal" looking people have depression...if people looked like they were depressed, more interventions could be made to prevent it.

I would like to know more about the real story before making assumptions about this woman. I'm not ready to assume that she planned on killing herself and decided to take her daughter with her.

This may very well have been spontaneous. For reasons and factors unknown, she may have made a horrific impulse decision to shoot her daughter, and suicide was the only way she could reconcile with the fact she just killed her own child.

I'm not saying the *is* what happened, nor do I excuse what she did in any way whatsoever. It just isn't clear-cut what her exact motives were and I can't rest on a judgment yet.

There's not going to be any way to make sense of something like this. And yet it's human nature to want to do so.

Having lost my father 18mos ago and watching my mother grieve and struggle with depression it would not surprise me that this woman might be going thru the same thing. And yes, the worst part of suicide is the damage done to those left behind. Perhaps this woman couldn't go on but couldn't leave her daughter to grieve two parents and have her pick up the pieces. Not right. Not rational. But depression isn't rational.

I find it very interesting that Steve Blow has been discussing suicide and society's reaction this week.

If she killed her daughter, she may have killed her husband too . . .

My understanding is that the mother had recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Sometimes brain tumors can affect the way people think or act...or maybe she just didn't want her daughter to have to go through the pain of losing another parent so early in life. I guess we'll never know exactly what she was thinking. The whole situation is terrible.
