Still pretty new to the TX forum, but have been doing tons of clicking and reading since I received some informational and useful replies in the main TX forum. Looks like Dallas is the metro I will be researching for a relocation from CA.

With that being said....whats with all the casual mention of snobs in Dallas or the "Texas Attitude"? I know there are insecure/insular people everywhere you go, but aren't Texans especially known for their niceness? What gives with all the mention of attitudes and snobbiness?

Can anyone give examples? Would really appreciate observations from someone who was from CA and currently lives in TX for a comparison of the two areas in relation to snobbiness, or a native who knows the social engine well. Is it true snobbiness or superficial fake-y-ness (or both)? Im asking for a comparison to CA's snobs to see if its really that bad (I think there are just more fakes in CA, and not so much "snobs").

Do people get labeled as a snob if they clean up nicely and tend to their personal style or drive a fancier make car? Or are they literally doing and saying snobby things to and about others?

Im just wonderin'...since the "niceness" and big heartedness of Texans is a major "plus" when thinking about relocating there.

I am not an expert on "snobbiness" nor did you mention what part of california. But the "snobbiest" snobs of California are head and shoulders above the snobs from Dallas (I hate saying the word snobs by the way). Dallas has nice snobs while California (only some parts) has the mean, in your face snobs if that makes sense.

I kinda laugh sometimes when in Dallas when I meet "snobby" people. I think to myself after meeting them, "ok but you live in Dallas".

I am familiar with west la and some of the beach areas in SoCal not so much familiar with Bay Area/NorCal.

Hello OP. I relocated to Dallas from Torrance, CA, but I worked in Garden Grove (the 5 and 22 intersections) so let me be the first to bid you welcome (should you choose to come here).

I have been here for a year and a half and I havent really seen the whole "Dallas snob" thing that much outside of Uptown Dallas. Even in the old money neighborhoods of Highland Park and Preston Hollow people have been very nice to us. Overall, I think you will find people quite welcoming here as I have. There are tons of people here from California as well (especially in the Frisco and Plano areas), so you will be able to meet some people from OC for sure.

That being said I have met some stupid people.

I've experienced both, and we can't hang with Southern California in the snob area. Even the Park cities folks are very nice compared to alot of people I've met personally and conversed with on this board from California.

As always there are exceptions to the rule, but as a rule, DFW is much friendlier than anywhere in California, particularly LA. When we refer to snobs in Dallas, it is in comparison to local areas that are generally friendly when compared to other places.

The problem in Dallas or more appropriately the suburbs of Dallas is there is a transient sense to many neighborhoods in DFW. It's not so much snootiness as it is lack of investment, so you have to be careful when choosing a neighborhood, particularly in Collin county. Having said that, there is alot of materialism in Dallas because we have alot of extra spending money because of our reasonable housing prices. That does produce a kind of snobbiness, but they'll say hello to you with a smile on their face. What Texas Guy 22 said is an illustration of what I just said

There are flashy people in Dallas- you can choose to be one of them or not. Whichever way you choose, there will be plenty of "like minded" people for you to meet.

No worries!

I think that comment describes NorCal snobs - as soon as they find out you are from Dallas they assume that your political opinions and intelligence are inferior to theirs.

That is quite true Lakewooder, of course that can be the case with people from the northeast as well, but definately moreso with Cal snobs in general. Many times they move to Texas for the cost of living and drone on incessantly about how inferior we are in this very forum.

It's amazing how one can move to a place for a year and instantly decide that 25 million people are all idiots. In the end it really is all about one's perspective on whether they are going to like a place or not. No place will provide you with instant happiness, if anyone is moving to a place for that, they are barking up the wrong tree. There was once a book about that entitled "wherever you go, there you are" that definately fits what I am referring to.

I've been in a room full of progressives in Plano, and have known a few neocons from Massachusetts and California, so I'm thinking you can find your crowd wherever you live.

But in response to the poster, Texas is by and large more friendly than what you'll experience as a rule in California. My vote is superficial fakiness btw, of the two options presented by the op. As mentioned earlier, particularly in the suburbs including the park cities.

At least for me, the majority of the snobbiest snobs I have met in west la are tied to specific industries which to be honest Dallas does not have. So when I meet someone really snobby in Dallas(which is rare) I think to myself "ok but you live in Dallas", that is more or less where I am coming from

I think Texans are great people, dont want to step on anyone's toes here

West LA snobs are really bad. We don't really have that here, thankfully.
