It’s based on how much commerce is going on between the entities, ie counties to combine them in the cmsa. Cardinal glass, big lots and a micro recycling steel mill are in durant area but do most business with the Dallas metro. (Not to mention Choctaw casino)

I grew up in durant we came to Dallas for big city things as it was significantly closer than okc or Tulsa. A know several mid 1960 grads from durant that worked for ti in Richardson and lived on ranches in Oklahoma. Lots of work in durant area now so I suspect there are more driving into durant’s county to work at the casino or one of those businesses I mentioned than are commuting out of there to DFW metro Jobs.

The ti semiconductor plant in south end of Sherman is in 2 phase. Phase 1 is a $15Billion dollar investment, I counted 13 cranes on site recently as they plan production will start in 2025.the other phase is another $15Billion I believe. Sherman property values are less than $5B now so this will be huge for just phase 1. Additionally another $5B chip plant is building built now just north of the TI site.

Why did ti go up this far to build? I heard one guess is water for the ship plant needs. Texoma is big and lake Hugo has lots of surplus water too if the laws let Texas buy Oklahoma water. There is a clause moving thru the courts where Irving’s has a contract with the Choctaw tribe and Hugo for long term water needs. The tribe says they own the water rights since long before Oklahoma was a state.

That was the case as recently as 2000. I remember taking some driving lessons in a parking lot of a factory outlet mall that had been shut down for probably 20 years. To have attracted that mall, it must have had something going for it long, long ago.

I could be mistaken, but I think the chip plant is being funded by us taxpayers. I don't know who their rep is, but I'm sure some deal in DC got it done.

I think TI and others are recipients of grants from the Chips Act, but most of the subsidy for the new Sherman Fab is in the form of local tax breaks (primarily property tax breaks).

Same thing. That practice truly needs to be repealed.

The fed gov has created some funding support but is not paying for the construction which is the cost I cited. They will get tax breaks for building there but water is a bigger reason than politics. Also ti already had a facility there too I believe though tiny compared to what you can see today going to the site area.

Were there any changes to the DFW Combined Statistical Area in 2023 compared to 2013 or 2003.

In response, I thought it would be fun to try to put together a full history of the components of the Dallas metro area, DFW metro area, and DFW Combined Statistical Area.

1950
Dallas standard metropolitan area established. Comprised of Dallas County.
Fort Worth standard metropolitan area established. Comprised of Tarrant County.

1958
Johnson County added to Fort Worth SMA (December)

1959
Collin County added to Dallas SMA (May)
Denton County added to Dallas SMA (May)
Ellis County added to Dallas SMA (May)

1967
Kaufman County added to Dallas SMA (March)
Rockwall County added to Dallas SMA (April)

1973
Fort Worth SMA (Tarrant and Johnson Counties) and Dallas SMA (Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, and Rockwall Counties) combined to form Dallas-Fort Worth SMSA (April)
Hood County added to DFW SMSA (April)
Parker County added to DFW SMSA (April)
Wise County added to DFW SMSA (April)

(DFW SMSA at end of 1973: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Hood, Parker, and Wise Counties.)

1983
Hood County deleted from DFW SMSA (June)
Wise County deleted from DFW SMSA (June)

(DFW SMSA at end of 1983: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, and Parker Counties.)

1992
Henderson County added to DFW SMSA (December)
Hood County added to DFW SMSA (December)
Hunt County added to DFW SMSA (December)

(DFW SMSA at end of 1992: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Hood, Parker, Henderson and Hunt Counties.)

2003
Delta County added to DFW SMSA (June)
Henderson County deleted from DFW SMSA (transferred to Athens TX Micropolitan Statistical Area) (June)
Hood County deleted from DFW SMSA (transferred to Granbury TX Micropolitan Statistical Area) (June)
Wise County added to DFW SMSA (June)
Current title of Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area adopted (June)

(DFW MSA at end of 2003: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Wise, Parker, Hunt and Delta Counties.)

2013
Delta County deleted from DFW MSA (February)
Hood County added to DFW MSA (transferred from Granbury Micro area) (February)
Somervell County added to DFW MSA (transferred from Granbury Micro area) (February)

2018
Hood County deleted from DFW MSA (transferred to Granbury Micro area) (September)
Somervell County deleted from DFW MSA (September)

(DFW MSA at end of 2018: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman, Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Wise, and Parker Counties.)

2023
DFW MSA at end of 2023: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, and Wise Counties. No changes as a result of 2020 census.

Dallas-Fort Worth, TX-OK Combined Statistical Area:

2003: Dallas, Collin, Delta Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, and Wise Counties (DFW MSA counties) plus Henderson County (Athens Micro), Cooke County (Gainesville Micro), Palo Pinto County (Mineral Wells Micro), Hood County and Somervell County (Granbury Micro).

2013: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, and Wise Counties (DFW MSA counties; dropped Delta Co.) plus Henderson County (Athens Micro), Navarro County (Corsicana Micro), Bryan County, OK (Durant, OK Micro), Cooke County (Gainesville Micro), Palo Pinto County (Mineral Wells Micro), Grayson County (Sherman-Denison Metro), Hopkins County (Sulphur Springs Micro).

2023: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman Rockwall, Tarrant, Johnson, Parker, and Wise Counties (DFW MSA counties - no change from 2013) plus Henderson County (Athens Micro), Navarro County (Corsicana Micro), Bryan County, OK (Durant, OK Micro), Cooke County (Gainesville Micro), Palo Pinto County (Mineral Wells Micro), Grayson County (Sherman-Denison Metro), Hopkins County (Sulphur Springs Micro), Fannin County (Bonham Micro), and Hood County (Granbury Micro)

So to answer the question, the change from 2013 to 2023 was the addition of Fannin and Hood Counties to the DFW, OK-TX Combined Statistical Area.

Potential candidates for the DFW Combined Statistical Area include Anderson County, Van Zandt County, Delta County, Lamar County, Jack County, Wood County, Hill County, Hunt County, Rains County, Young County, and Carter County. What keeps those counties from being included.
