I'd vote for Deep Ellum. It's close to work, it's just east of downtown, there are some good loft options that aren't that expensive (especially when compared to NYC!), it's on a DART line, and increasingly there are more restaurant and bar options like Deep Ellum Brewing Company, Free Man Cajun Cafe, Buzzbrews, etc.

Deep Ellum, Texas

Check out The Cedars and Downtown proper in addition to the other suggestions here. Downtown is undergoing a bit of a renaissance at the moment and there is quite a bit to do. Plenty of loft space available for prices that are extremely low compared to NYC. The Cedars is a up and coming neighborhood with a more close knit vibe, but there is easy access to DART rail that you can take to your job. Most things in the Uptown area aren't going to have the loft feel, but it is a great area to live in. Make sure you check out the State Thomas area.

Also the Farmer's Market, a Wal-Mart neighborhood market in State-Thomas, Rudolph's Meat Market and Mozzeralla Company in Deep Ellum. There's also an Aldi just east on Gaston by Baylor Hospital. Whole Foods farther up Gaston in Lakewood. Albertson's is on Lemmon and soon a huge Kroger at CityPlace. I think the CityPlace Target may also have groceries.

The closest thing you'll find to a loft in Frisco is the Aloft Hotel. Maybe you are thinking of a studio, totally different than a loft. Just as there's no basement in the Alamo, there are no lofts in Frisco.

Wouldn't that Wal-Mart be closer to Uptown than downtown? It seems to me that they are different directions. When I lived in Uptown, I could walk to the Wal-Mart and the Albertson's and I could also walk downtown to the DMA but they were two different directions. None of those grocery stores are in downtown although the small Urban Market is. Yes, there are a lot of grocery stores that are a 10+ minute drive away but they aren't downtown.
