I am looking for an apartment in north dallas and I have learned through past experiences make sure you know what the statistics of a zip are before moving in. I have used city-data.com or zipcodestats.com or American FactFinder from the US Census. Problem is, there is a zip code 75254 which is allegedly north of the galleria between spring valley and belt line. Im sure its not an error, all the motels, restaurants, apartments in that area have it yet for some reason all these websites have nothing on it, anyone understand this? Is it a new zip code?

Yea, it's a zip code. Maybe it used to be part of 75240. We used to be 75240, but became 75248 at some point. Maybe they had to split it again.

I don't know about looking at crime stats by zip code. The zip code areas are so big and diverse. I know 75248 has one extreme to another in it.

I did a little more research and yes it seems that it used to be 75240 which is a rather large zip code at 50,000. I guess the sites are based on census 2000 which is old.

Some of 75254 is the east side of Addison, some is Dallas. The rest of Addison (west of the Tollway) is 75001.

I live in 75254, and I love it. As far I as I know I haven't heard of any major crime. Close access to both Valley View center and the Galleria, grocery stores and of course the addison restaurant row.

I live in 75254, but it used to be 75240.

If you want to know what it's like, I'll tell you. Noisy, with lots of high-density living and people who like to jog. We have an interesting mix of jogging yuppies and section 8, and Montfort near Anne Frank Elementary is awful in the morning/afternoon. The area itself is nice, but don't be expecting plush luxury or a quiet life. You'll get neither! If you can deal with road noise, police sirens, and planes from Addison Airport taking off over your house all day and all evening then sure...the area's great. It DOES have great shopping and dining out, and it's a quick hop to the tollroad or LBJ. I don't go east on the surface roads to reach Central, though; I take Montfort down to LBJ then I use the hi-5.

Uh go down to Preston Oaks and Montfort to that section 8 complex sometime and watch the young people comparing firearms in broad daylight.

I live in 75254. It has it's good points and bad points.
As for the good, it's extremely close to Addison and everything that goes on there. The Prestonwood Wal-Mart is one of the nicer Wal-Marts I've been to, and there's a nice Tom Thumb close by too. You're very to the Galleria and Valley View Mall, and Willow Bend is an easy 5 minute drive up the Tollway (on weekends).
I'm not sure if the apartment complex that I live in is representative of the others in the area, but it's been my experience that the walls are thin, and the fixtures/construction is cheap. I frequently hear neighbors arguing and doing other things that I'd rather not hear. The kitchen is small and a generally unpleasant place to be (good thing there's so much takeout nearby!).
I've heard there is a good amount of crime in the area. Apparently there was a double murder at the apartment complex that I live in about a year ago... Even so, I don't feel especially unsafe walking around the area, but I may have an unsually high tolerance for that kind of thing since I grew up in Washington, DC...
Just by looking at the outside of the buildings, I think I'm in one of the lower end complexes. I have no idea how much nicer the others are or how much more the rent is at other complexes.
Overall, it's not really an area where I want my family to be, but I think it would probrably be great for people without kids.

I'm sure there is an exception to the rule, but I feel safe and again haven't heard of any major crime, or sirens that I used to when I lived in uptown.
