I really don't want to move into a place and hear every intimate detail of my neighbors' lives.

It would really have to a case by case basis for apts, townhomes.
For houses, well...inspect who your potential neighbors might be. Dogs, kids might make noise. Also drive by on a weekend afternoon-evening when parties are most likely to happen. I always stop people walking down the street to ask their opinions if I'm unfamiliar with an area.

Based on that location, Lancaster and DeSoto would provide you with the shortest commute. Cedar Hill and the North Oak Cliff area of Dallas are a little further out, but reasonable and subtantially less than your present 45 minute to 1 hour long commute. As I stated in an earlier post, most apartment complexes in the southern suburbs, including the nicer ones are within your stated price range. There are also some smaller homes and duplexes that fall within that range as well.

Cedar Hill has an abundance of restaurants and retail. The area along Interstate 35 East, which is the dividing line between Lancaster and DeSoto, continues to attract new businesses as well. This area has a few restaurants and some of the typical retail chains (Walmart, Home Depot, Kroger grocery store, movie theater, etc.) found in most suburbs. There is very little, if any, nightlife in the southern suburbs, but they are only a short drive away from Dallas and all it has to offer.

I hope this gives you a better feel for the area. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Do not go south. You do need an apartment locater who is educated on locations that would be safe for a lady. I would rent an apartment for 6-12 months and decide on where I wanted to be before making any major commitments.

For your safety, You need someone very knowledgeable. JMO Moderator cut: no solicitations permitted

Since you are making a blanket generalization about such a large area, my question would be why should she not look in the southern suburbs? These communities are close to her job location and there are safe, decent housing options to choose from within her desired price range. The OP clearly stated that she did not want to have a lengthy commute, which is exactly what she will encounter if steered further out.

Thanks all for the info. Your help is much appreciated. As I consider suburbs vs. city, would you reccomend any parts of downtown dallas? If I were to go the more metropolitan route I would be looking for one of the more upscale apartments / buildings.
