I can't spend more than $1000 a month for rent for one person, so I'm thinking of Irving or Mesquite. What are the commuting times like?

How big of a place are you wanting?

There are tons of 1bedroom places for under $1000 in nice Dallas neighborhoods that are closer.

Padmapper.com is a good resource

Downtown 75201, 75202
Knox/Henderson: 75204, 75205
Oak Lawn: 75219
Design District: 75207
Medical District: 75235

This. There is absolutely no need to live as far out as Irving or Mesquite!! As long as you're looking for an apartment and not a house, the zip codes above - with the addition of 75208 in North Oak Cliff- are a great place to begin your search!
