Actually it's Vons not Ralph's which is owned by Safeway. The Vons I use in California takes my Tom Thumb Reward Card - it's got a good selection but is a little dingy and dark. Like Tom Thumb, the prices are higher than other stores on many items. I do like the Pavilions groceries that they own out there...

Locally, I really like the Tom Thumb at Mockingbird and Abrams (north section of Lakewood). I think they could have a larger and better produce section. The service there is good. I see many friends and acquaintances there and sometimes get bogged down talking to people - last time I was there we had a small group chatting at 10 pm. A couple of weeks ago I ran into two classmates since Lakewood Elementary at the same time in the same section of the parking lot! We had a lot of fun talking, and even better, some people were staring at us wondering what was going on...
But I digress...

I still wish Tom Thumb were still local - nothing will ever be the same as when Jack Evans ran the company (he was later elected mayor of Dallas). I think there is a lot of loyalty from those days and some pretend it isn't Safeway!

That's too bad. I rather like the Tom Thumb in Plano. I remember the first time I walked in and could not believe how huge the store was. If they have to sell I hope HEB is the buyer!

I kinda wondered how Tom Thumb was doing because they never seem to have that many people in it and the lines are never long.

no kidding , Since I only shop there for convenience , I have to beg them to not take my single bag!
But it doesn't surprise me for Tom Thumb, ours on Legacy has been redone a few times over the years , but it is still gloomy and old . The prices are far more expensive than any other stores. I go there maybe twice a year , for their half size birthday cake.

They recently re-did the Tom Thumb on Arapaho (closest supermarket to me) but it's still a small dinky place with sky-high prices, long waits at checkout, and not a great selection of merchandise. I don't know how it stays in business.

There is a new Tom Thumb in Frisco on FM 423/Lebanon Rd. Lovely store, clean, bright, etc.

They're still considering what their approach is going to be for North Texas:

H-E-B says it has no timetable for opening area grocery stores | Shlachter, Baker & Fuquay...

Tom Thumb used-to-be one of the regular priced and/or cheap stores in the 70's and early 80's.
There used-to-be one on the corner of Camp Wisdom & Polk.
Years later, it was gone, and when I found one again (Hampton rd, in Oak Cliff) it was so fancy and
Upscale that I thought I was in a Bel-Aire (California store) !
So neat and tidy and ... expensive !!!

I sure hope that they don't disappear.

On a lighter note.. the DFW has gained some Winco's

I don't shop at Safeway brand stores: Randalls or Tom Thumb. Too expensive and i like keeping $$$ in my pocket. I like HEB the best. I wish Walmart would open more of those Neighborhood Market stores in central Houston like they have the one off N. Central Exprwy

2. One in Fort Worth and one in McKinney. I dunno about you but I'm not driving to McKinney to shop.

If they open one closer to me I might go check it out.
