Hi all,

Just moved to Dallas for work. My work is located in Garland, and although I would love to stay close to my job I would prefer to be more central in case I ever change jobs. I am willing to commute about 45 minutes (typical 8-5 M-F job).

My wife works from home doing permanent makeup and other beauty services, so it would be important to be somewhere that would be close to clients.

I would love to buy a new home, but am open to a used home. Where are some good locations to get the most for your money? I'm trying to find something around $250K. We don't have kids, so schools are not a concern although I imagine you don't want to live where there are bad schools.

I've browsed close to Arlington, and Frisco area.

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Eric

I'll start by saying that if your commute time to Garland is around 45 minutes, I wouldn't choose Frisco unless you're willing to pay a couple thousand a year in tolls to take toll roads, and even then, I'm not sure how easy it will be to get there in 45 minutes unless you leave early or late. Arlington to Garland in 45 minutes may be the same issue. It may be possible, but will require leaving really early (I would think) and hoping for no wrecks and no rain.

Welcome, and good luck, Eric!

Richardson. But no new houses in your budget will be any place central.

Denton to Garland in 45 minutes during rush hour? Denton also isn't very centrally-located.

Check out Forney.

You can still get quite a bit for your money here and the area is growing.

The commute from here to Garland would not be that bad at all imo.

There's no reason to be looking in Arlington and Frisco. You can live in Garland itself, or in Lake Highlands, which is just on the other side of 635 in Dallas and is thus more centrally located.

Think the key is where you want your wife's beauty service to be. Where're her potential clients.

Richardson or Plano is probably the best choice. More centrally located than Garland, with lots of amenities close by, and keeps the commute easy, depending on where you buy.
