The state of our through - 12 educational system is literally a national security problem and a ringing embarrassment, every one of us should be ashamed. For-petet's-sake our parents sent live humans to the moon and back fifty years ago! but we can't seems to cajole/encourage large numbers of kids across all races into working just a little for a high school diploma.
Apologies if you felt that was directed at you; it wasn't. It's a certain segment of our society (and even some of my family members) who seem to feel that any kind of investment in public education aimed at helping struggling students (of any color) from poor families equates to "socialism."

I don't usually encounter blindingly stupid people in day-to-day life...my profession is a somewhat self-selecting group of pretty intelligent people...but every once in a while I run into people who are so staggeringly ignorant that I really do wonder how they function on a daily basis. I don't put the blame entirely on them, though. We're all responsible for handing diplomas out to these dolts who don't know anything about the world around them or who think "math is hard."

It really breaks my heart when I hear a young woman say that math is hard. They're not talking about non-Euclidean geometry or linear algebra or vector calculus. They're talking about arithmetic.
