This statement sounds pretty bigoted toward old money doctors. We should not become old-money-phobic or classist.

So you honestly believe the OP is just looking for a "happy-friendly" doctor?

A gay-friendly doctor will be much more attuned/sensitive to LISTENING and TREATING the needs of gay patients. The bedside manner can vary significantly (doctors, dentists, specialists, surgeons, etc.). If I tell just any doctor I'm gay up front I've observed a good percentage wont' bother doing an examination until the very end of the appointment. They may be standing a little farther away from me, very serious, asking a ton of questions, hands across their chest, giving every indication through their body language and nonverbal cues that they really don't want to be there. If I go to a doctor who is very comfortable with gays they will usually be a lot more approachable and warm. They have no problem getting close to me the patient, touching me/conducting an exam, asking questions, and showing a genuine interest in me.

A gay doctor will also be less judgemental/more understanding of medical issues experienced by men (rather than writing it off as "well, you're gay so that's the problem). If I tested positive for an STD, there is less of a stigma in treating the issue in gay-friendly medical office (and as someone mentioned earlier, better access to new medicine) than if I went somewhere else where I get a lecture. I don't need a doctor telling me how to live my life. I'm there to get medical treatment.

Hopefully that clears everything up. I have heard of Dr. Pounders but his reviews on a few other sites are mixed. Does anyone else have any recommendations? Preferably in the north suburbs of Dallas? Thanks!

Do y’all have to fight with each other? I mean really. And over nothing.

To The OP - the doc I recommended was my Primary care doc 20 years ago. I must have been pretty obtuse not to realize most of his patients were gay, until I sent my husband to him and he promptly let me know. A quick google search yields descriptions of him as an internist who specializes in HIV treatment. Now I realize that isn’t what you asked for, but back in the day he was just my regular primary care doc. Not sure if he still sees non HIV but may worth a try. Definitely fits the bill as gay-friendly. You could always try calling his office and asking for a referral closer To home.
Good luck!

Is this indicative of Dallas that someone would have to request a doctor that is friendly toward gays?? Is the area that conservative? I know Dallas is part of the Bible Belt but I figured it was a fairly large metropolitan city that primary care doctors would treat everyone with respect regardless of their sexual orientation?

As someone noted earlier, doctors are people. People/doctors can have very different experiences and characteristics. Sometimes some people/doctors have character traits that are not good (eg explicitly treat people different from Themselves with disdain). Best to avoid them!

Other times people/doctors may not be “bigoted” per se but may behave in ways that make another person less than comfortable. Perfectly reasonable to want to find a doctor with whom you feel comfortable. No need to make broad negative statements about doctors. OP described his concern pretty well IMHO. Hope he finds someone he likes.

The poster wanted a suggestion in the Dallas Suburbs so that’s the tricky part, Dallas Proper is super gay friendly and if they wanted a suggestion around Uptown or Oak Lawn I would have been able to give a few.

Not a unique question at all in the gay community anywhere. It comes up in conversations I’ve had with fellow gay people new to the area before. It’s one of those things that straight people just don’t have to deal with so they don’t get it.

Stop it. You're being deliberately obtuse. OP is looking for a primary care physician who is open to having a gay patient. I don't have an answer for this person. I would hope any local PCP would be open to caring for all sorts of folks.

A local PCP should be open but may not be knowledgable regarding any issues that are of specific concern to the LGBT population.

Uptown physicians group is a well known gay-friendly practice. I know that is farther than you would like to travel, but you might call them and ask if they have any recommendations for people practicing further north. If the doc is good enough, they are worth the trip as long as you don't have to see them all the time!
