Hello everyone,
im a single mom (dentist) living in Las Vegas currently and will be moving to the valley ranch area middle of august . I have a 6 yr old son going to first grade in august. I love Vegas however the economy is driving me to a better opportunity in Dallas . My biggest fear is that Dallas maybe too conservative for a single mom and people may be too judgemental , moreover Iam an Indian . Iam very confused as to whether I should move or keep the job here . I do have student loans to pay and the job in Dallas is much more attractive but are there very many single openminded men in Dallas area? I have always lived on the coasts so am terrified of the move. Is it worth it ? will my son be happy in Dallas ? any input would be very helpful .

You will not have any problems like that here in D/FW. It is nothing like a small town where people form cliques, point fingers, throw rocks from their glass houses, etc.

Any big city will have a few people who are nuts, and in D/FW I know of one and that's only because she is a relative of mine.

If you live in this part of Irving, as an Indian, you will feel perfectly at home. I live in this area, and sometimes I feel out of place since I'm not Indian, but we all get along perfectly fine.

The Dallas burbs are politically conservative but certainly not what you are thinking. No, you will not be out of place as a Indian or a single mom. The Dallas area will be a great place to raise your child.

The North Dallas suburb of Richardson has a very large Asian Indian populace. LOL @ Dallas being ultra conservative...maybe 15-20 years ago, yeah. The city has completely done a 180 from the way it used to be back in the 70's & 80's. The stereotypical "Good Ole' Boy" mentality is all but a relic of the past. There's just way too many transplants & international presence to label Dallas as a conservative city now. To find a native Dallasite or Texan in the area for that matter is like finding a needle in a haystack.

huh? First of all, who said the burbs were ultra conservative, conservative and untra are 2 different things. Yes, the burbs outside of Dallas are still conservative, but certainly not Dallas and yes, there still is a good ole boy attitude, which is not bad or good, just fact. The attitude is changing but but many people living outside of Dallas, Richardson and the overall city itself still think a pick up truck and a Dallas Cowboy hat is all you need to succeed in the world.

Oh, to the OP, there is a very large population of Indians in the Dallas area. You will have no problems.

Wow, did someone take my posts the wrong way or what! It was not directed towards you.

I will however strongly disagree with your saying Dallas still has the "good ole' boy" mentality though...maybe if you're referring to some rural areas like Forney or 30 miles west over in Fort Worth then yes its still around.

As a never-married single mother, I can tell you there are some issues that come up with being a single mom. Some parents won't let their kids play with children of single moms. Some mothers shun you because they think you are after their husbands. You'll spend a lot of time with these husbands on typical Dad-duty activities - sports and birthday parties.

But by middle school some of these folks end up divorced, people become less judgmental and uninterested and all in all, it's not that big a deal anymore.

I think you should be fine. Certain Sub Divisions in Valley Ranch have almost 95% Indians. These Sub divisions do not have any community facility like pools..etc. I suggest you rent first - There are a lot of Apartments in Valley Ranch.Currently the home prices in Valley Ranch are in flux because a builder have increased the new Home prices by 20%+ in the last 6 months for similar homes they built when prices in rest of the US /DFW were falling down or remained stable. Most of these houses are large houses on small lots. The folks buying these homes are those who wants to live near their friends/ relatives. Due to this the existing homes have increased their prices. Both the new homes and existing homes are generally taking time to sell (although the DOM for Valley Ranch might be lower than other places). I am expecting this hype to stabilize once this builder sells all their houses and another builder (Billengsley) begins construction of their 10000 homes near 635/Beltline.
