Before we moved to Tracy we lived across the street from a fire station. Should we have asked them to "uh keep it down" when they roll out on a call? LOL

Judging from the number of people posting on this thread, it appears as if this is a very small problem, started by someone who just can't sleep, and while I sympathize with that person's sleep habits, I'd rather THEY lose sleep, than people, (stupid or not) losing their lives.
I drove down HWY 78 yesterday, and one of the problems is that there is a large amount of grade crossings that run parallell to 78 and mostly in Sachse. Wylie doesn't have that many, Garland has a few, but mostly in Sacshe, as they seem to be every quarter mile or so.

I wouldn't waste anymore breath trying to reason here... if they know you are from California they will dismiss you as a nutcase. You are right of course, but they will never admit it in Wylie Texas!

I used to lay there at night in Wylie and even with the windows shut and the a/c running, hear the trains, I kind of liked it. It felt "old school" and neat.

It's sad because about 10 years back there were several fatalities along that exact stretch of track along 78. That's the reason you see so many crossing arms. It just irritates me that people by houses near existing tracks, tracks the pre-date the homes by decades then complain. I guess more people will have to die because heaven forbid we interrupt the sleep of those to ignorant to do their homework.

They don't have real problems, I see it all the time working for local government. People are kind of spoiled, and whiney, and they have these big beautiful homes, jobs, a/c that runs, their health, and they look around and say "what can I complain about today, I know, the train noise!" They need something to really jolt them into reality, like a bout with cancer, or losing a child, losing a job, then suddenly everything seems not so worth whining about, and they are more appreciative. Do they even realize how many unemployed people that are homeless would just love to have a big new 4 bedroom house, with a/c, and a job, and live near the train tracks?

There's only one solution to it. Put arms at every railroad crossing, so that they don't have to warn the pubic of an approaching train. They've got to warn the public, right? Either by putting arms, or blowing the horn!!!!

Wylie has recently become a quiet-zone city. Garland is moving that direction and, since Murphy Road/78 is the boundary between Garland and Sachse, the Sachse City Council recently approved Garland's request to include this crossing in Garland's quiet-zone, with Garland paying all of the costs.

The City of Sachse will be looking at the feasibility of making the entire city a quiet-zone this year, with approximate costs of about $25,000 per crossing. This is not a slam-dunk due to our economy, but I personally support them.

The final determination and approval will come from the Federal Railroad Administration, who also dictates the regulations that KCS must adhere to in regards to horns, i.e., distance from and sequence/duration when approaching a crossing.

Train noise in Wylie/Sachse

Think of it as money in motion.

Default Quite Zone

Even though this has been made a quite zone, there are certain conductors that still lay on the horn continuously with no break and some that continue to blow. Can they be educated? Thanks,
