Recently we were looking at relocating to Orlando. The best schools tend to be north of the city (though phillips is rated well but renting sounds difficult) and where you live is where you go to school. Commutes can be quite bad if you are working in the south and need to get north.

Here in Denver - with choice kids do not have to go to the public school near them- and you can try to get them into any public or charter (or private). It was and is overwhelming? to figure out what to do. Note: We are not even in a school in the same county or school district and it is a charter!

*Rentals are harder to find. In my neighborhood, Berkeley Highlands, a woman came into the boutique where I work complaining about it yesterday. She showed up to a single family property for viewing... and stated there were at least 20 others there. She walked away.

That's nice that you got your kids in the school you wanted, out of district even. I will say what I have said before, do not ever move into a home in one school district assuming your kids can open enroll somewhere else. Not everyone gets what they want in the lottery.

Charter schools are a business. They make profit by placing 52 students in a class and 1 teacher (who is mostly underpaid and many are not even certified), they also make money by not purchasing textbooks, and if they do, they buy the cheap ones. They are a business, and your children are seen as ($$$).

My advice is that enjoy Public Education while we still have it because it is being erased of the map by strong politicians backing up the charter school businesses (many of them own charter schools and the $$$$ they are making and do not even care about education).

We moved two of our children from public school into charter schools and it was a great move for each of them. In my experience some public schools are too big, the teachers are overwhelmed and bullying can be a problem. The charter schools that we sent our children require uniforms (I am from Australia and love that), the class size was smaller and they were more focused on academics. Each child's needs are different but I loved the charter school experience.
