Live and play in Denver. Commute to ride your horse. I can't imagine any self respecting European single female in her 30s being happy in Parker or Highlands Ranch. These are new, cookie-cutter bedroom communities filled with white, middle-of-the-road, Christian (often armed) American suburbanite families. You know that movie, Truman? Who lives in a fake town? I always think of HR and Parker as where Truman lived.

Haha- thank you! Any suggestions on location, Littleton and centennial looking like they may be a good compromise.

Areas around cherry creek park look good - particularly as I have a dog?

Just to say thanks all for your advice. You've totally changed my ideas on what I thought I wanted. Whilst I am not a city girl (I am VERY rural where I live in England), I do not want to isolate myself and I think living in a suburbs like HR which is not particularly rural but not close to the centre either will be a little pointless. If I'm going to do it I might as well do it properly!

I am now looking far more into the Littleton, Englewood, Cennential type areas to be that much closer to "life". I am probably going to up my rent budget a little to $3600 ish which should still get me a spacious airy house with a few spare bedrooms for family to visit. Actually those areas are better for the horse as I am then commutable to either the Parker areas or the Evergreen/mountain areas, and could end up either side depending on what barns I find.

Am I right to assume about another $250 on top of rental for utilities?

Hello! Just wanted to chime in as I'm a fellow Brit in Denver. We have a thriving Brit community around the Denver Metro. Many live in the Highlands Ranch/Littleton areas so those might be good options for you. They are a bit of a hike to the airport though.

There are some huge Facebook groups you can join full of British people. Lots of people meet up for parties several times a year, there was a huge one this summer for the Jubilee, and a Christmas party is already being planned.

Also, if you're into football, most of the major PL clubs have regular hangouts. And there will be tons of watch parties for the upcoming World Cup.

Good luck with the move!

To each their own I suppose. I completely disagree with this characterization, but I guess that's your perspective. I know that for me, personally, going in to Denver to work every day, I would never want to live downtown. I do enjoy coming downtown to do some fun stuff, but living there would be a nightmare for me. That's the nice part about the Denver metro area though, lots of different places available for people to find something that fits well for them!

Is Littleton area really downtown though? Seems similar to HR but just with more light rail access.

I intend to air b and b for a few months and have a place in Lakewood to rent short term, so guess I'll experience it for myself soon enough. Can't wait- how do you like Colorado? Lots I hope! Though I am enjoying a very green but hot and sunny England at the moment.

I agree that Denver and its surrounds offers an impressive variety of living experinces -- and all relatively close. I think few people realize how compact central Denver is, with peaceful tree-lined residential neighborhoods within just a couple of miles of the grittier parts of downtown.

The two could not be more different.

Old Town/Downtown Littleton is a place unto itself, a city started 160ish years ago. It's thriving now, with breweries, trendy eateries, etc.

Highlands Ranch is suburbia at its ultimate. Until the first tract houses were built there in 1981, the property was a ranch, agricultural land. Its gathering places are primarily within suburban type malls, from strip to regional. There's no downtown like Littleton has.

(Note - Littleton as postal address encompasses many areas, not necessarily city of littleton, so need to look at details.)

Littleton isn't like HR in many ways. It has way more non-chain retail and food options, and even a couple of night life spots. It is also more walkable in general and there are more trees.
I live in HR and drive to Littleton or further north every week for entertainment and culture.
