Any supermarket you go to in Iowa they ask you if you want your milk in a bag. Doesn't matter if you have 30 other bags of groceries, gallon pitchers of OJ, gallons of water. they will only ask about putting milk in a bag. Do they expect me to drink it while I'm driving? Does carrying milk in your hand carry some kind of benefit? Does anyone ever answer "No why would I want the convenience of putting my milk in a bag?" What's the deal with this? Only place in US where I've heard this question?

They asked that in Ohio, too, Juice. I just reply, "No thank you," and not think about it any further.

Added: some people with sore fingers may not want to carry something cold because it'll cause further pain. That's all that comes to mind.

Some people don't want to waste a bag with milk. I only got a bag when it was hot (milk jugs sweat) or if I had many bags to carry all at once. Otherwise, no bag needed. I can use the handle.

It's not just an Iowa thing.

I have been asked this question in Ohio, New Mexico, and New York.

I am pretty sure they ask whether you want a bag in all 50 states because milk jugs have handles. Many people feel that putting containers with handles into other containers with handles to be a pointless redundancy.

It's definitely not limited to Iowa. It's also not exclusive to milk, or inclusive to all sizes of milk containers. I've never been asked whether or not I wanted a quart of half-gallon of milk in a bag, but I have been asked about gallon containers of other drinks, bags of fruit or potatoes, etc.

I thought this thread was gonna from a Canadian asking Americans why we do not subscribe to their sorcery of "milk bags."

Next time, reply: "No, please leave it in the original container. If you put it in a bag it might leak."

And then watch for this response:

A gallon of milk is easier to carry by the handle than it is in a plastic bag

I'm asked every time in Las Vegas. I always answer no. Why would I prefer the handles of a plastic bag digging into my hand over the comfort of a handle on a milk jug?

Weird question.
