I will be coming into Detroit for a Red Wings game on a Thursday night and looking for a hotel to stay at downtown? Should I stay at one of the casino hotels or somewhere else? Please give me your recommendation. I would like it to be close to Joe Louis within cab ride, etc.

Ren Cen Marriot is about as close as you can get. Walkable. In fact it would be stupid to take a cab. It is a bit expensive. Probably in the $200 range.

Fort Shelby or Book Cadillac are close. Also pricey. Downtown hotels that are cheap, are geenrally places that yo do not want to stay.

The Omni which now has a different name is also close. I know it changed names, but not sure what it is now. It is not bad, but when a friend stayed there we could see where his door had been pried open in the past.

There are three Casino Hotels. Greektown, MGM and Motor City. MGM is the fanciest/nicest. Greektown is in the best location. Motor City is probably the cheapest.

There are a couple of typical motor lodges downriver along the I-74. Thinks like Days Inn, Best Western, Holliday Inn Express. I see them every day, but never reallypay any attention to what brand they are.

You can stay in hotels in Windsor, but with customs, it will take you an hour or so to get to J.L.

What about the new(ish) Hilton Garden Inn in Harmonie Park, i doubt that is too expensive and has always seemed relatively clean, safe, etc.

On the internet:

IF YOU GO
Deemed the tallest hotel in the world when it opened in 1924, the Westin Book Cadillac Detroit (1114 Washington Boulevard; 313-442-1600; bookcadillacwestin.com) was featured in Frank Capra’s film “State of the Union,” starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Reopened in 2009 after a $200 million renovation, it offers views of the Detroit River and a central location downtown. Doubles from $179.
For a more intimate experience try the 40-room Inn on Ferry Street (84 East Ferry Street; 877-784-6835; innonferrystreetdetroit.com), a complex of four historic homes and two carriage houses. Doubles from $129 include breakfast.
Urban adventurers should try the brand new Hostel Detroit (2700 Vermont Street; 248-807-2131; hosteldetroit.com) complete with volunteer “ambassadors” ready to show you the sights. Single bunk in an open room is $23 a night.
