So the ol' lady has some vacation coming to her after Christmas, and we want to go to the auto show this year. What are some good, reasonably priced hotels in the downtown area?

Deinfe Reasonably priced?

Ren Cen marriot is probably your best bet. There is the book cadillac, Fort Shelby, Shearton and whatever the place is called that use to be Omni That is all I know of downtodown althogh I know there are some smaller places that are reaonaably nice. There is a B & B that is pretty nice.

Most of the big hotels will likely sell out and jack the rates up for the auto show. I was living out of state last year and came back for the auto show. Stayed at the St Regis hotel in Midtown (by Fisher Building on W. Grand Boulevard). It was a decent hotel and only $60/night on the weekend. Though you have to wait that week and get the deals on an orbitz type website. Parked on the street and my rental car was fine (though they also have valet). I'd be suprised if you could find a room at the Marriott for less than $200 during that time.

IF you have access to a car, staying in the western burbs or downriver (south of the city) would be a better thought.

I was looking at the Renn center on line and I believe it was about $156 for that week end. What's the name of the one across the street from the Renn center?

Across the street? Or do you mean Greektown? (I guess you could say it's across the street :P) But yea, they have some okay packages. Normally it's $139, but around the auto show, it'll be closer to around $170. Of course, that's un-assuming how high the price will get the later you book the dates. It'll probably most definitely get higher than that (closer to $210 for a single bed).

I would also safely assume that the other casino/hotels (MGM and Motor City) will have similar rate increases. The only downside to those two hotels is that they aren't within the people mover loop (Greektown is, however).

Thumbs up Greektown Casino

I've traveled to Detroit for business many times this year and have stayed at Greektown Casino about 6 or 7 times. Nice clean modern rooms at a reasonable rate. The casino itself is rather low-brow, but the hotel gives me a $20 credit every time I stay there, so I go blow it on the slot machines. Casino buffet is horrible-Do not eat at the buffet! Especially since there are good restaurants right outside. The staff is OK. A few times, I had to wait a long time to check-in. Bellman and housekeepers are very friendly. Oh--Free parking is great!

Duh... The sad part is, I pass that spot so many times and always thought that was the entrance to the apartment complex (despite the obvious signs and flags all over there).
