I along with my family will be moving to Waterford very soon. We want to settle there and have a family business established to sustain ourselves. I have chosen Waterford simply because i have a family who is already settled there and willing to support me.

YOur suggestion will be highly valued!

What business is best for you depends on your skills. A law practice might be a good business to open in Waterford, but if you are not a lawyer, then it woudl nto be a good choice. Have you ever run a business? If not, you want to start with something that requires no employees, little invetment and not much bookkeeping, marketing or regulatory compliance. you need to take some classes that will teach you about the necessary insurance, tax and governmental reporting issues. Employing people is very complex and you really need some experience to avoid trouble.

Do not think that you can just open a store, a bar, or a restaurant and make a go of it with no training or experience. You will probably end up bankrupt. How much do you have to invest in your business? Suggestions will vary if you have $10,000 or if you have $1,000,000

If you have no special skills you might want to get a truck and plow and learn to plow driveways and parking lots. Snow removal is a decent business. In the summer you can do landscaping. Both are quick to learn and do not require a massive investment.

Waterford is not in Detroit.

The Casino Next Door - BusinessWeek

An internet cafe with slot machines. If I had money and time I'd start one of these. It's barely legal at best, but I do know of a couple in metro Detroit that are open. Put this in the right area and it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

If you can handle robbery risk, perhaps a payday loan shop? I met a man once who owns one, and here's how he described it, his words, not mine: "It's legalized loansharking." America is getting gradually poorer, these sorts of things seem to be lucrative. Maybe a "we buy gold" storefront if there isn't another one around the area? Some areas have too many of these already, though, and who knows where gold and silver prices are going to go.

Any suburb of Detroit = Detroit.

At least in the eyes of outsiders and at least that's how it is in most metro areas.

No one else besides us (well I don't really care either, I'm speaking of those in the region) else really cares about the silly technicalities.

Ummm, Google says 45 minutes from DOWNTOWN Detroit.

So that means it's 30 minutes from majority of Detroit, not the hour you claim.

I personally consider any place that has directly experienced suburban growth due to exodus from Detroit a suburb. Waterford would fall into that category.

And so what if it's not in the same county? Southfield's not in the same county as Detroit, but I think most would consider it a part of Metro Detroit (or "Detroit").

And Lansing compared to Waterford? Ummm, no. Waterford is essentially our equivalent of Bollingbrook in Illinois. Lansing is the equivalent of Springfield in Illinois. Watermelons and Cherries, no comparison.

Oakland County it seems you blink a business will open and close. Restaurants this is very much the case so that would not be a business I would open. What training and career experience do you have?
I guess a business with low start up cost, one you can work on your own or with 1 other, low rent, etc.

OK. I meant Waterford Crystal; you know the glass stuff.
Kinda like an oxymoron.
