Just had a discusion with my students. Most are from Detroit, a few from out of state. When I asked where a person could live in Detroit on a $30,000 salary, 85% screamed---WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO LIVE IN DETROIT?
They also said if they cold have any job, it would be one that paid enough to get out of Detroit and move to the burbs, preferably Sterling Heights, Troy or Utica.

I dont know if it's true or not, but it's easy to see how emptying neighborhoods lead to a downward spiral. The worse it gets, the worse it gets. Everyone who can ends up leaving.

Negative feedback loop.

Detroit has a long way to go before reversing that, given the pace the so-called comeback is occurring.

Those students should probably leave Michigan and explore other major cities.

They will realize what's normal in Detroit is not normal everywhere else (in terms of how everything functions).

You weren't surprised by this, were you? Unless a person considers living in Midtown or Downtown, there really aren't any attractive options. The historic neighborhoods (Indian Village, etc.) are too expensive for that income.

People only live in the ghetto because they have to. By "have to", I mean that it's all they can afford.

Most of my students are born and raised Detroit. A few are from D.C, so they have an idea that there are many things wrong with Detroit and not the norm.

As for getting to other states, they will be lucky to get out of Detroit and even see the burbs.

This whole region is broke. No other region in the entire country operates in such a divisive manner.
