Are you daft?

Did I not say: "Aside from a few cultural attractions and sporting attractions."

Frankly, those are nice, but they are not a huge part of most people's lives.

And, yes, in terms of nice restaurants most people in America would have any interest in trying and shopping, most mid-sized cities have more than Detroit, and probably even in terms of nicer apartments and neighborhoods.

I haven't been to Grand Rapids in a while but a quick Google search reveals, in the city proper, it has three large shopping malls, four multiplex cinemas and too many REAL grocery stores to count.

Thanks for pointing out that Detroit has the DIA, though. I'm sure that is revelatory to everyone on here.

We know that lots of people can exist in a cultural vacuum with family, job, TV, shopping, and video games as their life focus, but what does this say about them? The cities, including Detroit, have more to offer - and you seem to see Detroit's current plight as other than a temporary situation. Well, that's you.

I still would like to hear more from the OP about actual job location and preferences so we can be of further help.

That's fine.

People come on these boards to learn. When I sense a question is in earnest I respond.

I don't know much about Pittsburgh but from what I understand it is in considerably better shape than Detroit proper is.

If you want to sell this f**ker like a used car to some *******, that's your business.

I try to impart useful and real information.

I would imagine coming from Pittsburgh to Detroit proper would be a bit surprising because coming to Detroit proper from anywhere else in the country is surprising.

Your argument is like saying don't point out that someone's blind date weighs 600 pounds because he has a nice watch, nice car and a decent haircut.

-Streetcar (construction starts this spring)
-3 casinos
-Unique neighborhoods like Lafayette Park, Palmer Park Apartments, West Village
I can't believe I missed that statement, but hell no, I am always back and forth between Kalamazoo and Detroit (living) and can tell you from experience, comparing the offerings/things to do/ ect in Kalamazoo to Detroit is laughable.

What are your favorite major retailers in Detroit proper?

Wow, I just can't decide.

Even Kalamazoo has a Macy's, JC Penny and a Sears.

Kalamazoo has the same amount of movie theaters as Detroit--2.

Kalamazoo probably has a comparable number of decent restaurants.

Kalamazoo likely has a better selection of grocery stores.

I am not fond of Kalamazoo and would choose to live in Detroit in most cirucmstances, but this is reality.

My point is that things are changing in Detroit as they have done in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. Also we know too little about the OP's situation in order to offer much more help.

The moral of the story is some people derive their life's meaning based on the proximity to the closest Kohl's or mall food court for Panda Express.

We should respect their rights and be tolerant of those who chose such existences.

No, the point is to be a sanctimonious contrarian who is unable to discern the difference between nearly any other so-called major city in the country and Detroit to someone who is making a serious inquiry as to if they should live there or not and whose idea of a major city, unless you have literally never left southeast Michigan, is likely far different than downtown Detroit.

But don't let me get in the way of you patting yourself on the back for being champions of Detroit!

You are there to protect the "precious jewel" from the haters, reality be damned.
