Hi, I am currently in my first year at Saginaw Valley and am interested in going to Wayne State. I have done some research online and it seems like a pretty good school. How is it safety wise? I am interested in the school because I think Detroit is so cool. I think I would enjoy being able to go to ball games and hockey games on the weekends. I also think it would be nice to be close to everything. What I am really interested in is how the school is in general? I am considering the nursing program and am wondering how it compares to saginaw valley. I think Wayne State is a better known school than saginaw and that there will be a lot more opportunities for me there, especially with the big hospitals near by when I do my clinicals. What do the students do on the weekends for fun? i have heard it isn't a party school which doesn't bother me but I want to know people are going out and doing things because in saginaw you are so far away from everything there isn't a whole lot to do. Thanks.

p.s.- If you could also give some of your own opinions on the school if you have gone there yourself, thanks!

Crime-wise, it's one of the safest areas of Detroit. Though with that said, it's about the same as other comparable urban areas; i.e; parked cars can sometimes be broken into if not parked in a highly visible area.

WSU is still mostly a commuter school and most students probably live in the suburbs of Detroit rather than on-campus. Though, Wayne State seems to be building more dorms every summer so they're probably trying to change that. Either way, the feeling I get is that most students will trek over to Ann Arbor or typically find whatever events are going on around town or have get-togethers with friends. Detroit has a few bars and nightclubs, though probably not as many one would expect for such a big city. Not too many actually near WSU as they're all closer to downtown around the casinos and stadiums.

I'm haven't attended WSU, but many of my high school friends went/are going there. Seems like a good standard college. Pretty nice that it's in a big city but the drawback is that everything feels pretty scattered around so it's not exactly a complete big city experience. I don't know how it compares academically to other places, but for something like nursing, you can't really go wrong here.

I have a friend at Saginaw Valley but I personally don't know what it's like.

At WSU safety is huge. WSU is in the top 50 safest colleges in the nation with a 90 second average response time. Wayne State among top 50 safest college campuses in nation - Wayne State University

WSU from what I hear has a great medical program and the big draw like you said it being in the center of the hot spot for the medical scene. You have Henry Ford hospital, DMC, Children's hospital, ect, ect.

Wayne State's biggest drawback imo is that it's still a commuter school. But the more midtown has been improving, the more people have been feeling better about living near the school. It's a big step up from back when the projects was still up the street. I'm really pushing for alot more dorms and apartments for students in Midtown to give it more of that MSU or UofM campus vibe but still maintain it's urban vibe.

With that being said, there are a a couple dozen bars in Midtown alone. Greater downtown Detroit has more bars and restaurants than you can hit in your entire college career between downtown, midtown, corktown, greektown, jefferson ave, not to mention casinos. With more and different ones popping up every time. And if you get bored with that, Hamtramck, Mexicantown, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Pontiac, Ann Arbor, Windsor, ect. Other than that there's plenty of other nice bars and restaurants scattered about the region.

Outside of that you have alot of concerts and events going on in the downtown area alone. If your still in Detroit during the summer, there's more going on than you can even keep up with.

There is also the riverwalk, belle isle, and dequindre cut for the nearby outdoor stuff.

For groceries there is a Whole Foods in Midtown and Eastern Market is in the next neighborhood over. And there are smaller local grocery stores nearby as well.

Retail is mediocre near WSU. There are a few good stores like NoJo Kicks, Bobs Classic Kicks, Detroit Vs Everybody, ect and there are more coming like the Nike store and Art Van. But for most of the retail you have to go to the suburbs. There is no movie theater downtown no more either, you'll have to go somewhere else to see a movie.

Overall, you would probably like it if you make some friends who likes to have fun, it might help to get a car but if your living near WSU you will only have to drive for shopping and the movies once the woodward light rail is built, it has a little over a year left I think.

Sometimes animatedmartian perplexes me. Most students go to Ann Arbor? To do what? People from the eastside of Detroit or Macomb County go to Ann Arbor on a routin basis?

There alot of things going in an around Wayne State University. This student is too young for bars, but there are alot of restaurants, cultural institutions, etc in the area. Plus if you want to drink alcohol at age 19, you can go to Windsor, ON - the border crossing is only 2 miles from campus. Downtown Windsor's nightlife is AWESOME on the weekends.

By the time the student gets here, the (needless) streetcar will be running and he can hop on that to get to downtown and the riverfront. There are a number of students and young adults who live in midtown as well. Between midtown, Downtown, Eastern Market, Corktown, etc, he should not get bored (but first priority is the books of course).

It depends on the person. Many people I know also have friends at U-M/attend there themselves so going to Ann Arbor probably every few weekends (if they don't already live there) isn't that big of a deal. Others might seldom go to Ann Arbor or not at all, but at the very least it's an option within reasonable distance. There's numerous bars and clubs in Ann Arbor that often have more concentrations of young people compared to an often more mature crowd in Metro Detroit so often times it's just a matter of preference for what one is looking for. Nothing against Detroit's options.

Ok, I got it.

I just think you undersold the midtown a little. You said that there aren't many bars, but there are. There are some right on campus, including Lefty's Lounge on Cass, the Saloon-looking bar down the street, and Tony V's next to Carhatt, also on Cass Avenue.

Then you have other bars and restaurants nearby, such as Cass Cafe, Jolly Pumpkin, Motor City Brewing Works, Mario's, Traffic Jam & Snug, the Bronx Bar, Third Street Bar, Union Street, The Block (Formerly called the Midtown Grille), Selden Standard, Honest John's, the Miami Bar, the Temple Bar, Garden Bowl/Majestic Cafe, HopCat, and Z's Villa. There are probably a couple more I missed. Restaurants like Potato Place, Byblo's, Falafill, Detroit Pizza Factory, Chartuese Kitchen, Starter's. I've missed several of those, too. That's just in midtown!

Honestly, some of those opened up so recently I forgot/didn't realize they were there.

WSU is (slowly) transitioning from a commuter school. At the beginning of the year they had nearly 100 students temporarily residing at Hotel St. Regis. They have about 3000 students living in dorms.
Wayne State 'problem': Too many students want to live on campus
