You'd be fine, just pay attention, stay off side streets and be prepared to run red lights if needed, not trying to be sarcastic either, I lived in the city for 10 years and still venture there, just with extra eyes open.

I don't think you'd have a problem in the worst areas of Detroit as long as the sun is up and you didn't stop anywhere to pick up a hooker or buy some crack. It's like a vampire/Apocalypse now thing: "Don't EVER get out of the boat!"

Those pics can bring tears to your eyes. What is the matter with those idiots in charge?

Or are there any?

Downtown is not dangerous as some people would like you to think. I've been all over at all hours I never was robbed or anything.

I go several times a year from mid-Michigan to Tiger/Lions games (I hate to admit it but I do have Lions season tickets). We frequently stay at one of the downtown hotels and wander around that area without any problems in the evenings. In general, from the stadiums, we go south to the Rencen, west out to the Town Pump & Hard Rock, and east to the end of Greek Town. We don't ever go north of the stadiums...I don't think there is anything in that direction. I haven't really ventured outside of that range in the evening so can't comment further. Detroit is no Chicago but it still has some fun entertainment and good variety of restaurants. And it does has it's own unique "personality".

Mexicantown strikes me as very friendly/ safe. And the food is amazing! I especially like La Gloria bakery and Lupitas for very authentic Mexican food and friendly service.

Broderick Tower. They plan on putting lofts in there but with the economy who knows. The bottom is now a bar because of the Comerica traffic.

I am looking to move to Detroit area in january, with job opportunities at Sinai-Grace and Harper Hospitals...any info, such as are the neighborhoods safe? Will probably live in Ann Arbor and commute--is this feasible? I looked at a few of the videos on youtube---WOW, seriously scarey stuff. Sad, sad, sad. Why do people want to live like that?? I just don't get it. And, I want to avoid it. Any info would be great!!
